hi guys!
...so i just got a brand new set of systems cases for my 04rr. i tried to attach one of them to the case bracket, making sure the hooks and guide rails were positioned correctly before nudging the case to seat properly. when i tried to fold down the carrying handle to engage the securing mechanism, it wouldn't do so. i felt the underprotion of the bracket where i expected a depression or groove into which the mechanism is supposed to engage and there was no such groove. i removed the bracket to inspect, and there seems to be a cover over the supposed groove. seeing no screws in the area, i tried to gently pry the cover out, but it wouldn't budge. not wanting to harm the bracket, i gave up and here i am asking, "what gives?"

STOP! There is no cover plate or removable part. New cases will be very tight - SOMETIMES!
My full size left case was a new one from an RS. I thought that it was faulty, or something needed filing. WRONG!
You need to make sure the top two hooks are FULLY home. Press down as you latch the handle. Try the flat case-handle first, then the case latch-handle second. It's only when things wear in that the two can easily be latched together.
If the handles are still stiff, then have a look for any slight moulding ridges or defects under the case locating hooks, or on the rails themselves. Gently file these off, but no more than a whisker of material.
The cases will loosen up over time as vibration wears away any seating imperfections.
My right case is very easy to latch. The newer left has loosened up a lot, but is still very tight by comparison.

I had exactly the same result and response myself when I got my cases! I thought the cover needed to be removed because it was so hard to latch teh cases on the rails, but after consulting some other RR owners was ssured that is not the case (no pun intended) and they just need to be properly aligned with the brackets at the bottom straddiling the backside of the rear footpeg brackets and both top hangars egaged in the cutouts in the rails, and then as MIXR said, push down the handles one at a time. It'll be harder than you'd hope, but they will snap into place with just a little more effort than you'd want to have to put into it!

Yep - It's an interesting system. I could have sworn I was going to bust something when I got my 'new' case, because the originals were so loose.
Searched everywhere for some form of adjustment, and found nothing. Eventually figured it out by looking with a strong torch and small mirror, and playing with the bag off the bike.
Then I just 'forced' (very gently) the latch closed and it's been slowly getting looser ever since. I recall someone posting the same thing a while back, and I think there is some light filing that you can do, but if now latches - Leave it alone.
Better to have a tight case than one that is loose and may fall off, although I am still not convinced that a properly located case can 'jump' the hooks.
