Power Socket Where?

I have a 2002 R1150R ABS. My battery needs to be charged. I do not have the manual. Where is the Power Socket located on my bike to charge the battery? I bought the bike used. Thanks for not calling me blind and/or stupid.

The accessory power outlet was an add-on but the connection for it is right behind the starter cover kind of hidden behind some stuff with wire ties. You buy the outlet, find the connection and plug it in. Then drill the appropriate hole in the starter cover to place the opening of the outlet.

Others who have actually had to add this on will either confirm my description above or tell you I don't know what I'm talking about. I admit I don't know a whole lot about this procedure since mine was already installed when I bought the Dominatrix. But through endless reading of others' plights and modifications to the bike over the last 4 1/2 years, I have come to the conclusion that my description above is somewhere near correct.

Of course yours, like mine, may already have the acc. outlet installed. If it is there is a small flip cover down on the rear end of the starter cover on the left hand side of the bike. It uses a BMW plug, which is different from the standard cig. lighter power outlet in cars. To use the Battery Tender as a trickle charger you would need the adapter.

You can also charge the battery by attaching the charger positive lead to the main power connection on the rear of the starter after removing the cover. Then ground anywhere on the frame of the bike in the same area.

That's the more useful piece of advice.

The accessory socket runs through a switched feed (remember it turns off when the ignition is off) so doesn't have a "direct-line" to the battery (I stand to be corrected on this, but I'm fairly sure I'm right).

The starter motor line DOES have a direct connection to the battery, and is nice heavy-duty, hi-tension cable.

Other than directly connecting a fly lead to the battery, the starter motor line is your best bet with any normal charger.

I also have a 2002 R1150R to which I have recently been trying to fit the accessory socket.

On my bike the starter motor cover has a hole already drilled to fit the accessory socket. The hole is blanked off with a push-out plug.

My only trouble is that I have ben unable to locate the fabled plug supposedly located behind the starter motor.

If you manage to find the plug on your bike, I'd love to hear about it.

At least through the 2004 model, the accessory outlet is not switched and can be used for a battery trickle charger.

The leads for the accessory outlet are bundled tightly together with a wire tie behind the starter cover and very near the positive terminal on the starter itself (at least this is where mine was). The spade lug connectors were attached but were inside the tightly wrapped bundle of wires, so it took me a while to figure things out. It was also very difficult to pull the wire bundle out and cut the wire tie since it was so close to the hot post on the starter. It's in there, believe me!

Okay, I finally bit the bullet, cut the cable tie and gave the 'looped' cable a good tug and, hey presto, there was a cable with the mail plug on it which fits into the back of the accessory socket (BMW Prt No 61 13 1 391 630).
