I have owned a 2007 R1200R for nearly 1 month and being a weekend rider only, covered just over 1500 kms. The bike is the most fun you can have on 2 wheels; handling is outstanding. My riding ability or perhaps better expressed, my confidence in motorcycling has taken a great leap forward with the R1200R; eg. surprised myself when for the first time the foot peg touched the road when coming out of a very tight.
So what is the fault? Its the design of the BMW R1200R rear hard cases (right & left). Discovered yesterday when giving a ride to a fellow biker who was experiencing mechanical problems with his bike (not a BMW), that for the passenger to mount and dismount the bike is nearly impossible without hitting the panniers with a boot. Not sure whether the design fault is due to the placement of the rear foot pegs, the hard cases being to wide/ high, or a combination of both. But I don't think it was due to my passenger as I too had great difficulty in using the passenger seat while the panniers are attached.
Whilst the boot scuff marks are unslightly, the integrity of the hard cases are beyond reproach. Now can you help me? Is there some way of removing the scuff marks without damaging/ discolouring (yes, I am Australian) the black plastic hard cases?
Would greatly appreciate your assistances.

Case scuff marks
Yes, that is a problem on dismount. I usually put the sidestand down then use my now-perfected "left leg hop" away from the bike with my right leg parallel to the ground. Great circus for all watching!. If you are flexible enough, it is possible to pull your right knee forward and get off the bike without touching the right sidecase.
Flexibility is the key to this situation!
On a remount, it is very easy to have the bike on the center stand, get on like mounting a horse, and not kick the sidecase. You then simply rock forward and drop off he centerstand and go.

It's no design fault of the bike..it's a design fault of the pillion..not having enough flexability or technech getting on.
Almost every time a pillion gets on my bike I ask..please try not to kick the case as you get on..an they still kick it...doh!
I sometimes even put the bike on the center stand and ask them to get on the front..and then slide back to the rear seat..just to help stop them kicking it.
Then they kick the tank instead lifting their foot across..

I just asked Mrs. celticus if there had been a problem last weekend when she and the side cases rode with me. "No" was the answer. Mind you if the cases get scuffed I don't much give a damn. Both me and the Mrs. have average size feet and we find this bike's cases and pillion riding position easier than that of the K1200RS we used to own.
Perhaps a hard case doily would help with the scuffs?

Ian: I also have the BMW hardbags on my 12R. I step through, mounting and dismounting, rather than swinging a leg over as normal. Kind of a pain in the ass but it works....and no bag heel scuffs! I used the same technique on my 96RT back when. I mount before my S.O., she puts her left foot onto her leftside foot peg and stands up and also steps through, rather than swinging her leg over. Same on her dismount. No scuffs as of yet. With any luck at all, scuffs would come off easier as my lids are painted. Time will tell I guess.

Seriously..... no problem..... there's an easy fix.
Either do the entire bag, just the lid, or figure out a clean way to do a portion by using aluminum tape to tape it off.....

I don't use the rattler, I take my stuff to the local shop and have them shoot it. It looks good, doesn't scuff, and you no longer have to worry about considering yourself anal for expressing concern over a bike that looks used.
