FYI: I've been using buy.com fo quite a while. They are usually less expensive and normally have free shipping, but not on all products. I always check to see if they have it first.

I was using them at work regularly, but our business sector said we need to use one source for better pricing (Insight), they are quite a bit more expensive, you always have to pay for shipping, and they conveniently ship from multiple warehouses so you end up paying for even more shipping per order.

I was told I'm not seeing the big picture, as usual!

I have a pair those in white, about 2 years old,

I am very happy with them. One comment. When wearing them I was getting sore ears; it was the wire hanging down contacting my ear & pushed into my helmet. Dawned on me one day to drape the wires/cords over & around (front to back) my ears so the wire sits behind my ears. Works perfect & now I can go all day with no ear discomfort at all. Plus the plugs stay in place better while putting on the helmet.

I don't ride with music often or on commutes, but on the highway I find it a safe way to keep alert.

I love these! First ride with them today and they 1) don't get pushed out of my ears when I put my helmet on and 2) sound great! The Shure ones I have sound a bit better, but I can't get the helmet on over them. My one quibble with the Etymotics is the gauge of the wire is very lightweight... The Shures are much more solid with nice thick wires... YMMV...

Thanks for the tip. Ordered mine Monday and they arrived Friday. Just came back from a ride through Calistoga and Healdsburg. The mustard grass in the vineyards absolutely gorgeous this year. The earphones were a great addition. Blocked out the road noise and could listen quite comfortably.

BTW, here is a tip. I got some light fishing line and tied a knot around the small tube part and then made a short loop. This lets me tug on the fishing line loop instead of the Ety cord when pulling them out of the ear. I'm hoping this makes the cord connection last longer. But, with prices like these, replacing them won't be as expensive.

BTW, these flanges are meant to seat deep inside the ear canal for the best sound and outside noise isolation. I've heard some people complain that they fall out or come loose when they put their helmets on. If this happens to you, you need to try one of their smaller flanges which should come with your original purchase. There is no way they will fall out if you have the proper size fitted correctly.

Guys I will post there but I am selling a pair of new unused Etymotic ER-61's...I bought a pair a couple of weeks ago thinking I forgot mine on an airplane but I just found them this morning in my luggage.

I've had these for about 3 months now and the left ear phone is not putting out the same amount of sound as the right. Any idea of what I can do to remedy it, or do I just have to buy a new pair?

Sounds (no pun intended) like the filter is clogged Gypsy. When you purchased the earphones, there should have been a small package of extra tips and also a few tiny spare filters along with the tool to replace them. You can also purchase more filters from the Etymotic website.

Could somebody help me decide... I've been wanting a headset of some kind to listen to 'tunes', and possibly integrate with a GPS and/or Blue Tooth enabled phone. I've heard a lot of good things abot the Etymotic earphones. I always wear hearing protection( Howard Leight), so I'm guessing these headphones will also keep some of the wind noise out. My question is this.. I've been also thinking about helmet speakers, such as what you get with a Chatterbox system. I've been told that the helmet speakers still work even when your wearing the foam ear plugs.. is this true? So...what is the concensus here...etymotic earphones...or helmet mounted speakers? BTW, I use a Schuberth Concept helmet. I'm not even sure if these can be retrofitted for ear speakers. Anyone know?

I can't help you with the ear speaker question but I will attest to the noise blocking ability of the Etymotics. I've been using them for over two years, even when I'm not listening to my tunes. They work great at blocking noise. I once used custom made plugs but have since thrown them out.

The ER6i plugs come packaged with two sizes of ear flanges and also foam tips. I use the 3 flange (largest) ones because they fit my ear canal best. The secret to these is that you must insert them deep in your ear canal for them to work best so it's important to use the correct size. You can order from 3 different size tips from their website listed earlier in this thread.

One of the main reasons I like my Ety's is that they seal so well in the ears, that the wind noise is very minimal. In fact, I could set the Ipod at a reasonable level for me and not have to turn up the volume later when I got up to a reasonable speed. YMMV but I'm not sure Ety's would work if you want to use an in-helmet speaker system along with them. You might not be able to hear the speaker system !

But others may have a more direct experience with them.

After a couple more months using the Etymotics I have to say that they truly are the best headphones (for the price) I've ever used. Even my wife has her own pair now after using mine for a couple days. She has smaller ears, so the option to use the smaller flanges really sealed the deal for her. Once you get used to the "in ear" style, you'll never go back. The sound isolating qualities are excellent and I can only imagine that an "in helmet" speaker would have to be extremely loud to compete with wind noise.

Mark , I like the Shure E2Cs. They are slightly less expensive and sound better. I have tried them and the Etymotics side by side and the Shures were quite a bit better sounding .

I tried the Shures, also, but did not like them. They stick out a lot farther and, for me, were not good for wearing with a helmet.
