I must say it's been a bit frustrating in going over the maintenance and other archived threads. I haven't been thru them all,......but it seems most every one i've tried to pull up the pics on are no longer available! Uggrhh!!!
Not sure why,......but it would seem to me the pics could have/should have been loaded up on the site's storage capacity rather than linking to a poster's which most likely have been removed or changed.
What gives?
Any Reason Pics Are Gone From Archived Threads?

You've answered your own question. Many posters use links to their own or a third party hosting service. If the links are broken beacuse photos have been deleted, moved, updated etc, then the message board can't display them.
A lot of people use 'free' hosting sites that have limits (say 50 photos or thereabouts). If there is no 'space' left, then some photos have to be deleted in order to link in new ones. Voila! - There go the older linked photos in the threads on this board!
Damned annoying, but that's the way it is. Some people just download the thread with the info (and pics) they want to their own files. Can't do that with linked photos, just the embedded ones.
Other problem is that embedded pics take up server space, hence some preference for linked pics instead. Either way, if the link gets broken, the pic disappears and you get the dreaded red cross.

You can also
the poster with a link to the post and ask for the pics. I saved all my pics in 5 locations: CDR, flashdrive & 3 Hardrives. Finding them and E-Mailing them as attachments is possible for a much wanted article if the author is willing.

Johno....mine is also a Canon Ixus 40....I've had that little tri pod for years...I saw that someone else here did this and thought I'd give it a try.
I put a piece of rubber bicycle inner tube between the tri pod and the mirror to stop scratching and help with grip.
It seems fairly stable..it moves back a little in the wind..but it's easy to just push it forward a little and take a pic on the move.
I'm sure you could still buy those little folding tri pods at camera shops like Ted's....they come with a Velcro strap and I just used that.
btw..That stop with the farm and lady pics was Bairnsdale...she is a good friend from work..she just retired and bought that little farm house..we were passing so we stopped in to say hello.
