WTF is he doing on a BMW???
I thought the only ones who rode naked were the Harley riders?
Oh wait, I get it, they didn't want to stereotype anyone because we all know BMW riders, at the least, do wear helmets.

I've had the pleasure/pain to live in various locations that have had laws that permit freedom of choice, and the G W Bush view of life: A police state of rules and regulations that discorage anything other than their acceptable norm. Sorry you don't approve of what I want to do, never mind it has nothing to do with you. Pick what ever statistics you want about accidents, I have found statistics that prove helmet/sans helmet-it simply doesn't matter. I hope for a day that I can be free to do as I choose - within the limmits of the US constitution/10 comandments. There is nothing like freedom - I have a shadowy memory of it.
I just saw another public service message posted today on another message board with a bunch of naked bikers making the point 'what do we have to do to be seen'. Lots of skin on bikes lately!
Too many comments like that and this will be moved to the playhouse!
And last time I checked, helmet laws and such were matters for state laws, not the US President!

I agree with WNCBMW. I'd like to know what rules or regulations GWB has imposed that limit your freedom? Certainly, he hasn't required you to wear a helmet. The party that is big on limiting individual freedom is the Democrats. They want to regulate everything, including how fast you can drive, what you can drive, even what you can say. (Political correctness, in my view, is one of the biggest problems we face because it stifles any sort of free spech or exchange of ideas ... and it is exclusively perpetrated by the liberal Democratic elite.) I'm a big booster of individual freedom that does not adversely affect someone else and will support the party that seeks to preserve it.
As for helmet use, you really would have to be a moron to go without one.

no helmet law here in iowa and in illinois. i support almost all freedoms (even ones i am not interested in exercising). i always wear a helmet. i would also support the state suing the riders (or estates for the deceased) who injure or kill themselves and waste tax-payer's dollars.

I have a friend who rides a K1200RS and never wears a helmet unless we travel through a helmet law state. He wears a doo rag and leather vest--you know, the HD pirate look.NHighCotton wrote:WTF is he doing on a BMW???

On my way home from Yosemite on Sunday, I passed a few motorcyclists on the 101 southbound north of Santa Barbara. There were very few motorcycles that I actually passed the whole trip (and maybe one that passed me), so these handful stuck out in my mind. Mind you, I was late in my journey and tired myself, and so I could be projecting a tad. But the sun had just gone down, and I'd zipped up all the vents in my jacket and was about ready to put on liner and heavier gloves (the hand warmers, mmm nice, postpones heavy gloves). No rain or anything, but it was getting cool. I'm not going that fast either, between 70 and 75 at most.
So this pair I pass, cruiser types (no make or model in the dark), but guy and passenger are wearing half type helmets. I turn and catch a glimpse of their expressions as I pass them. The lady in the back has her head down, gritting teeth -- cold, I take it and trying to get out of the wind. The guy has a bandana around his lower face, squinting ... he obviously had to take off the sunglasses, and I'm wondering, how the heck does he see? And, also, I hope they don't have much farther to go.
Helmets are law in California, but I'd wear a full face helmet no matter if it was the law or not. I've conked my melon in a MC crash before, and I know the helmet has saved me. Right now I'm investigating an accident where a guy fell 6 feet off of a ladder and smacked his head on a concrete floor. He lasted 2 weeks before he died and believe me you don't want to read the coroner's report. Nobody's gonna make a law requiring a helmet for climbing a ladder, but who out there thinks that they're taking their life in their hands by climbing a ladder? Now go out and jump on a 200 HP machine in the middle of commuter traffic ...
If we didn't have to pay for the people who are permanently disabled because they chose the freedom to ride on the street without a helmet, I'd be all for making helmet laws optional. Clean up the gene pool a little and maybe get some idjits off the road permanently (not saying that those who don't wear helmets are idiots, just those that crash while they're not wearing a helmet). But the truth is the rest of us pay when someone is disabled by a brain injury for the rest of their lives.

My brother (who is a damned good rider) never used to wear a helmet and rarely wore even a jacket, just jeans and usually a tee shirt. Too macho for dorky protective gear. A while back, I was riding out west to meet him in New Mexico. My last memory was of passing an 18-wheeler at 80 MPH on the interstate outside of Monroe, LA. I remember having a vague sensation that something was wrong and trying to steer toward the median. I woke up in the emergency room with someone saying: "Motorcycle accident on the freeway. Fortunately, the guy was wearing full leathers and a helmet!" As I cleared the fog from my brain, I remember thinking ... is he talking about me? I was on the freeway, and I was wearing full leathers and a helmet.
It turns out, according to the truck driver, that I had a blow out. The inner tube came out of the tire and wrapped around the swing arm, effectively locking the wheel. He said I did a flip over the handlebars and landed on my back. I must have skidded quite a ways because my leathers were pretty torn up. However, I suffered no injuries at all ... just the eventual loss of a fingernail on my little finger, for some reason. I did feel like I'd been hit by 3 NY Giant linebackers for about a week, but the helmet and leathers saved my hide big time.
My brother took one look at my helmet and torn up leathers. He didn't say a word ... but he NEVER rides any longer without a full face helmet, leather jacket and boots. Sometimes, experience is not only the best teacher, but the only teacher.

Panzerleder - heck of a story! That type of crash conjures up all sorts of other possible scenios, all of them with much worse outcomes!
