Wanting to add a top case to my 2003 R1150R

Picture of R1150R on our Home page is showing a top case anyone know the brand? I would like to purchase a setup like that. Better yet if someone is selling one let me know.

David,

It's a Givi - can't tell you the model cuz they have all different sizes. It's a very common top box so you should have no problem finding used ones.

Other option is Hepco Becker. Finish matches factory bags. Heres the 40 liter topcase:

You do need the factory saddlebag mounts for it though. Got the rack and bag for under $300 from http://www.eurotechmotorsports.com/

David....I have the Hepco-Becker setup as shown and it's great. If you have a silver bike you can get a silver top on the case at no extra cost. Pricing is very reasonable, and the installation is easy and very secure. I have the optional toprack and backrest and it's a nice, compact (40 l) setup.

Here's a couple of picts of the J.C. Whitney top box. It runs about $55. or so, comes with a mounting plate that bolts right on to the BMW luggage rack, has enough room for one full-face helmet or a bunch of other stuff, is lockable, water-tight, is secure, never moves at speed, removes with the push of a button (once unlocked), and has a carry handle if you want to take it in to your hotel. Plus the black pebble grain is a perfect match for the BMW system cases.

Not as large as the H&B or Givi, but costs a lot less. I've used mine on numerous long trips. Good value for the money, I love mine.

I have one of those J.C. Whitney ones, too. I bought it used, so it was really cheap. I use it for commuting and shorter day trips.

Ditto the recommendations for the Hepco & Becker rig. Here is a shot of mine, wide open, gobbling up a lot of what I carried on a recent 2900 mile trip. Works great, matches the OEM side cases, locks, sturdy.

my question is about the jc whitney case. Is it water proof like our system cases? If not, what do you do to keep the water out.

Another vote for the JC Whitney case. The most riding I've done in the rain was about 6 hours straight. No water issues.

The most I have been in the rain with this case is a one hour ride in a heavy rain on interstate highways. It did not leak. The inside was bone dry.

However, I do not see any sort of rubber gasket, so I would not bet on it to be always dry.

To those of you with the JC Whitney Top Case...

What is the model/part number for the R1150R?

I'm certainly interested in picking one up, but as there's no JC Whitney's in Canada I want to make sure I get the right one. I've got the BMW luggage rack and system cases now.
Does it just bolt on with that?
All hardware included?

Yes, the base mounting plate will bolt right on to your BMW rack. Everything is included.

Mine has never leaked, in thousands of miles of touring in all kids of weather, including torrential downpours and marble sized hail. If you want to carry something sensitive in there, use the dry bags that Munchmeister recommends, or just bag your stuff in trash bags or large zip-lock baggies.

I installed a JC Whitney top case on my R1150R top rack about a year ago and couldn't do without it now! I used 1/4" thick neoprene to shore up between the top rack and the case's base plate to take up some of the slop there since the rack is convex and the base plate is flat, and cut the included mounting bars so they are just long enough to grip the underside of the top rack's mounting flanges, and put some rubber vacuum hose over the ends to give it extra grip. I installed the base plate so that the mounting bars' rubberized ends snug up just under the top rack's mounting bolts, which allows you see the top rack's roundel through the hole in the base plate (but the case always covers it so it doesn't really matter, but is a way to align the base plate when installing it on the top rack). Then I made some spacers from stiff plastic tubing that I slid over the mounting bolts under the top rack (i.e. between the mounting bars and the underside of the top rack) so that when the mounting plate tightens, it pulls down against the top rack's mounting flange, not the top rack. I think this made it stronger as I've (over)loaded it with ~ 20lbs of parts and it didn't budge. I noticed after a few months that the forward mounting bar had bent slightly and the base plate was rocking, so I reinforced it with a piece of 1/4" thick stainless steel that just fit inside the bar's channel, drilled two holes in it to let the mounting bolts pass through it and reinstalled it. So far, so good!

I treat it with Armor-All to keep the extreme Florida sun from degrading the plastic, and haven't noticed any "greying" or cracking.

Hope this is useful to you and I apologize if it's tedious to read -- I'm sure you all know that engineers aren't good at writing manuals!
