Another New Windscreen

I got the MRA Vario Screen from Twisted Throttle.com

It fits on the mounting hardware for the speed screen. It's really not that much bigger than the speedster screen, a little wider and a tad taller. What makes the difference is the vario lip. I've tried it at a couple different positions and it's really nice. You still get a little wind coming through but it's not buffeting, just enough to get you some clean air. I like it a lot -- I may end up selling the speedster screen because this screen seems to be a good all arounder!







I also just got a used set of System Cases, the lids are really scratched but they work and they were cheap! Getting locks for them tomorrow.

Like the shield. As for those scratches on the System Cases, take some 0000 steel wool, soak it in Armour-All, and rub the area in a circular motion. After a few minutes, a lot of the scratches should be less noticable.

Interesting screen. Which exact model did you get, and what was the price? I looked at the Twisted Throttle web site but could not quite figure out which one you bought. thanks.

There's not much helmet buffeting at all. You can feel the wind but it's not strong at feeway speeds. I haven't tried all the positions on the vario part yet. It adjusts from almost flat on top of the main screen to all the way up to where it adds about 3 inches to the top of the screen.

I rode 55 -60 mph with it all the way up. Seemed like there was more wind around my head in that position (I'm 5' 7" short legs tall torso). At lower level on the freeway it was nice, just as I was expecting to feel that wind blast at me there was this pocket with no buffeting at all. i also tried one click up which seemed just as good.

Nice looking shield. I have been looking an "all-season" screen, and this looks like it may be the one. Anything you don't like about it?

For comparison - this is the MRA Windscreen with the BMW Speedster or Flyscreen taped over the top of it. (Sorry about the pic quality, had to take then inside my garage). Anyway, you can see that the mRA screen is quite a bit wider, but not much taller. For reference since the tape up jpb was a little weak, the mounting holes on both screens line up to the same mounting bracket.







The first time I mounted it up using the BMW screws, then realized I was supposed to use their screws with rubber mounts. So I took it apart and put it on the way they directed. And promptly notices a lot of vibration in the screen. So I compromised, the BMW screws below, the MRA screws with rubber bumpers above. If I do any more fiddling with it I'm going to have to swing by the BMW store and pick up some new rubber screw mounts because these have about had it by now.

Other than that, I like the screen. I still get a bit of air coming thru, but not like being windblown before. I'm used to a naked or semi-naked bike, so I can't compare it to anything with a full fairing. I haven't done a grand tour yet, so any long distance reports will have to wait.

Thanks for the pictures. They look fine (especially with that nice Canon camera).

I think I will leave my Touring screen on for the winter but I might buy this next Spring. I like the way it looks. However, it is such a pain to change the brackets for the wind screens.

I always try to resize my images to less than 800 pixels per side for posting on boards. After that, it depends on where you're hosting the photo. I use Tinypic.com -- but I'm not saving an online photo album, so other servers might be better for you.

I have a Wunderlich Vario Screen. It works great, but is a little pricey. The mounting hardware has a nice clean line.

Darcy - how are you getting on with the screen after a couple of months?

I've been scouring Givi's and Parabellums, but the UK importer of the MRA Vario is getting another batch in tomorrow, and it's a only 6-mile detour off the 240-mile ride I have planned.

I'm still torn between 70mph+ arm-stretching whilst 'naked', and major buffeting at 80mph+ with the BMW OEM speedster screen - I think the MRA Vario is the way forward for me. It's also half the price of the BMW OEM 'second size up' screen here too at around £88 (if you already have brackets).

Another option for the saddlebags, is to paint the lids with pick up truck bedliner paint.

I just got back from a 1500 mile tour on the Bruce up to Northern Cal and back ... (photos at http://s95.photobucket.com/albums/l134/ ... to%20trip/ )

The MRA Vario screen did a good job, although I think adding some handguards will improve comfort and wind protection. I rode most highways with the adjustable portion of the screen at the top position. I had some cheap headphones taped into my helmet for music, and at 70 mph + I could barely hear it at top volume (note: the speakers aren't against my ears, they're just in the hollow part of the helmet that sits by the ears). However when the CHP stopped me on HWY 49 and stood next to me I couldn't hear her at all ...

Anyway, wind buffeting was negligible most of the way. Some wind noise, but tolerable for the most part. The last day I did 570 miles from Yosemite to San Diego. whew!

Man, that looks like a great trip - I wish I coulda gone with you! You're right about the screen - I use it in the top position on the slabs and it functions better than a larger screen, plus it's not hideous.

The hand guards work so well, I'm given to leaving 'em on in the summer (Hey Rocky, wanna see me pull a rabbit out of my hat?). By the way, fantastic pictures!

I've just ordered my handguards from Bob's BMW.

I notice you've got some nice farkles too. Are those the Wunderlich mirrors or some other? I've got so much vibration in my stock mirrors I'm beginning to think something's wrong. Not that I use them all that much, but when that CHP was shadowing me I sure wished later that I could have told for sure she was back there.
