The can is off!

Something to thing about. As cool as it sound and as cool as it looks you might bend an exhaust valve by doing this. You have shortend the path from the tip of the muffler to the exhaust valve allowing cold air to go in from the cat. to the exhaust port at the head. I have seen in some hot rod and BMW race bikes that I have built and been around in the last 20+ years that this could be a problem. As the exhaust is cooling off it is drawing in cold air. To make sure this did not happen we always plugged the end of the exhaust at the end of a race.
The cat. may be restrictive enought to keep this from happening. Just some thoughts and maybe nothing to worry about.

Interesting point and one I'd never have considered. Maybe it'll be OK if the weathers hot but this is enough to make me stick the OE can back on for winter.bmweuro wrote:Something to thing about. Valve damage was my first concerns...after checking with a few different BMW mechanics they all gave me the big thumbs up..
Now if you were to remove the cat as well..you could have a reason for concern.
Our cat is very restrictive..that's why any improvement in performance always first requires removing the cat...it acts like a big restrictive muffler.
I had four years now..riding almost every day..no probs at all...loud back firing when backing off would happen if the cat didn't provide enough back pressure.
I'm no expert..I'm just going by what I'm told..I'm all ears to expert advise.
I hope some one can do a dyno run of..can on vs can off..that would be interesting..I wouldn't expect much difference though.

Well, I finally got around to pulling the can off of my 2004 1150R, and wow! The difference in sound is amazing; the tone is much more muscular and mellow at the same time. Haven't had a chance to ride it much yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to getting out on the bike tomorrow afternoon.
I'm also thinking about adding a full-size system case on that side as well. I'm doing a 2 week trip out west in August, and the extra space would be nice. Will a standard left-side 1150RT System Case fit right on to the current mounting brackets? I know DJ mentioned re-riveting an RT case, but I'm so lazy. It' be great if I could just pick one up at the local BMW dealer and pop it on there.
Thanks,
Brian

After I saw the neat installation using the stock clamp/shield, I went on a tear this weekend looking for the perfect extension. After about a dozen stops and even more phone calls, I finally went to the net where I found what I think is the perfect pipe. California Muffler has a 9" turn-down extension to slip over a 1 3/4" outside dimension pipe (part # CMTD 1789) for $7.15. I'm calling in my order today. Their # is 818-998-7280.

I think these guys went out of business or something. I ordered one when I saw your post, never got it, and now their number is disconnected.madbinkster wrote:After I saw the neat installation using the stock clamp/shield, I went on a tear this weekend looking for the perfect extension. I think I'm going to put the stock can back on. I talked to my dealer's service department and they recommended against doing what I had done... Plus, the only tips I could find look pretty ghetto esp. with the stock heat shield.dcameron wrote:Go to your local muffler shop. They'll have a variety of tips. The shop I went to was so jazzed by the mod they didn't charge me and tack welded it on also.
It sounds a little nicer, but I'm more concerned with not getting jacked by the dealer for some silly warranty crap, that and being annoyed by pigs.
Thanks for all the advice on this one, though. It was a fun experiment, but I think I'll put it back on...

The can is back on...
Well, today I put my stock can back on... I have to admit, I grew tired of the backfiring I was getting when engine braking and my mileage in the city was suffering due to too much unnecessary twisting of the throttle to hear that hooligan sound...
(Somewhat OCD, I think I am...) It took less than 10 minutes to get it back on and now I'm thinking about a simple slip on can... Anything lighter than the stocker... I will search the site for info and recommendations... It was fun for a while and it's easily taken off again if the spirit moves me...

Hi toner.I run my Ed80 with a Remus Y piece connector replacing the cat,and a Remus Revolution muffler. The muffler has an easily removable baffle for deeper growl factor
.Doesn`t have the `wardogs of Gomwrath`edge that my previous steed enjoyed, but that was then, straight thru Duallin Ducati,in biker heaven Emilia Romagna,Italy
And this is now,in the GATSO bedecked, health n safety obsessed, sad grey autocracy we`ve allowed ourselves to become
Oops, sorry, must of been those pamphlets i`ve been reading.Anyways,I like the Remus system very much.Pops a bit on the overun on occasion, but the bike seems to run much more freely without all that horrible muffling(and weight!).Mind you,if you prefer to ride something that sounds like a sewing machine, then I would stick with the original, approved, checked, and checked again, original items.A quick thank you to riceburner for the baglux tankcover recommendation, all black, looks great,as do the GS1150hand guards.Going to fit a rear wheel hugger from 1100S that my dealer has in stock, and says will drop right on.Really enjoying reading all you guys here on this forum.like a drop of fresh air! Please excuse my Sat.morning rant, must be age creepin up

Hey Toner...look at this thread you started and now it's like..."never mind"toner87 wrote:Well, today I put my stock can back on...
I'll admit, I did the same quite awhile ago. My slip on exhaust tip fell off twice and I wasn't willing to weld it on. Still miss the sound however!

I've followed this thread with a lot of interest. I actually went down the route of fitting a Remus y piece before the thread was begun and I have been happy with it. Perhaps a little more noisy than stock, but still easilly quite enough.
The backfiring is often caused by a slight air leak at the exhaust/silencer joint. It only needs a very slight air leak and you will get backfiring on the overrun.
Ride safely,
Rog
PS The Yorkshire Moors and Dales here in the UK have been magnificent over the last two or three weeks.

Late to the 'herd'...
After seeing a Roadster with no can at the LeeParks, Advanced Riding Clinic I attended on Sat.
I decided, shooot, maybe this isn't such a hard thing to do after all.
It took me closer to 15 minutes because I had to spritz some WD-40 on the bolt holding the front cover piece on, and then it took a LOT of wiggling.
The funny/ridiculous thing is that the bike doesn't seem to SOUND any different sans can. So, I ask, what the heck is that 20 pounds of metal doing on there anyhow??? Sheeesh.
Next I gotta get a replacement tip to complete the "hooligan look."

I drilled and tapped a hole in the cat stub, M5 and bolted the tip on. Hasn't fallen off yet!taosports wrote:Hey Toner...look at this thread you started and now it's like..."never mind"toner87 wrote:Well, today I put my stock can back on...![]()

Well, I put my can back on after about a week and a half. I realized that it did sound different and the exhaust tone was right in a range that sounded to me like a toy boat. More annoying than anything else.
Plus, when I cracked the throttle, I got a sort of <GASP> and delay sensation before the power came on to the wheels. Not enough back pressure.
Yeah, so now I can say I've BTDT.
A fellow rider mentioned when he noted my hooligan look, that he had a friend who owned a BMW and worked at a HD shop where he had access to a dyno. He tried several high performance mufflers and no muffler and the bike ran the best with the best powerband with the OEM muffler.
Go figure. Those Germans really do know what they're doing.
