The road to Boise

Post by machew01 »

The road from Raleigh, North Carolina to Boise, Idaho is 3,062 miles long. 3,050 of those miles are paved. There is still one bridge to be built, but the free ferry works just fine. Actually, I think I prefer the ferry. Expect to share the road with cows and cowgirls. I can recommend the Pump & Pantry Motel in Broken Bow, Nebraska. It provides admirable propinquity to the feed lot and the coal trains.

Random thoughts:
#14 In parts of southern Indiana, the only terrain features are corn fields.
#27 Wyoming hunters can't shoot well. One would think that a bullet fired horizontally in a random direction would hit at least one deer.
#32 Mule deer at least have enough smarts to be curious.
#36 Judging from the smell, Christmas trees come from western Montana.

Who says one cannot tour on a K1200S. After 3,000 miles, nothing hurts, and I feel fresh. But I did get a beer before I even checked into the hotel.

We wired ahead to that rancher in Dillon and asked if he could get Chew to stop for a picture. I guess he came through!

Have you ever stopped and camped in a cornfield?

I seriously dig those pictures. Thanks for making the extra effort to share with us.

If you hook up with Rally Co-Chairman Jerome Eberharter, tell him hello. I rode the bus to the Jack Daniels Distillery with Jerome and Debbi Harbour at last year's RA RAlly. Not that they would remember me, but there were only a handful of us on the third bus.

Have fun and keep us posted!!!

Nice update! Your photography improves when you stop! :P

Serious trip envy! Send more photos!

Since two of Mac's comments mention deer, have you had some close encounters of the deer kind?

Each of us has had to slow down at some point to let deer get off the road. But the memorable hoofed animal encounter was with an antelope.

It was in southern Montana on U.S. 212, and I was in the lead. I saw an antelope ram in the grass on the right side of the road. I started braking since I didn't know what he might do. Well he started sprinting parallel to the highway, in the same direction I was riding, and right ahead of me. I outran him, but I had to keep my speed above 45 mph to do it. I did not know antelope could run so fast!! I pointed to him so Cam would know to watch him just in case he decided the highway would be the faster track. Let it be known that the new BMW K-bikes can outrun an antelope -- in a straight line.

It sounds like a great adventure. After you guys rest up, you need to share more pics and stories.

Mac, the antelope was just messin' with you because actually I think they can run about 55-60 mph.

Seeing the picture of the cows in Dillon reminded me of my visit there a couple of years ago. I have almost the exact same picture. Actually the cows I encountered were on a dirt road leading to my cabin - probably same herd just a different road. Maybe there is a fabled wandering herd in Dillon. Montana is special to me since I my favorite fly rod, mandolin and guitar were all made there.

Send some pics of Boise. I've never been there. Tell more stories. Have a blast

Thanks for the reports.

Now there's a woman after my own heart :) Don't let my wife hear me say that though...

Great shots...I wish I was still on my trip (particularly in Montana).

Stories....Hmmm! What happens on the road, stays on the road....

In some town, Illinois, I think, I asked a gas station clerk for a detailed map and maybe some local information about roads north. She had no maps.

"No maps!", I exclaimed.

"Honey, folks around here know where they are." was her reply.

MAC tells good stories...I shoot bad photos. We are a travelin' team!

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was a motorcycle rider who rode so very fast that he couldn't keep track of where he was. But he kept riding very, very fast and eventually arrived at his hotel where his truly fast riding companion was patiently waiting - after having checked into the hotel and enjoyed dinner and a beer.
