I feel I deserved most of those I've gotten in the past, since I knowingly and blatantly sped. No arguments from me... my booboo. However, the current one I have on record was in the middle of nowhere while I constantly modulated the throttle while sightseeing. The cop was in a position to be nice and courteous, but as a good soldier, lacked the ability to assess prevailing circumstances and followed orders explicitly. For this I have difficulty promoting Utah tourism.
To balance out your Utah comment. Last September visiting Torrey UT meeting friends of BMWST.COM. Highway 10 from Huntington to I-70. Pretty straight, two-lane boring. Limit 65. I'm cruising along at what felt comfotable. Up front out of a slight bend comes a Chevy Blazer with lights on top. Ouch. He makes a not rushed U turn behind me and comes up with lights flashing. I slow down, right turn signal on, keep on going slow as there is no shoulder. At the next farm entrance I stop off the road. A smiling County Sheriff comes up, tells me not to worry, he got me at 87mph (22 over limit!) he is only going to give me a warning, but please slow down. While this was happenning my other ten buddies rode by while I kept him busy. I very much promote Utah tourism :)
You don't stop riding because you get old - you get old because you stop riding!

As I've said earlier, cops are human, and everyone is different (yet I take it out on Utah, tho' it can happen anywhere). Glad to hear you got off on 22 over, as I was hit with doing 65 in a 55 (only 10 over) on SR20 in Iron County. If you saw the road, you'd understand where I'm coming from. BTW, I spoke to a Utah County Sheriff in Cedar City after getting ticketed by their Highway Patrol; he said he would not have bothered given the circumstances, and has even gotten ticketed by H.P. himself. Thumbs up to Utah Sheriffs; down to their Highway Patrol.
Traffic signals timed for 35mph, are also timed for 70mph.

This is a cartoon that I drew about eight years ago which sums-up my true feelings about speed traps:

Yup. I just got back from a ride to Flagstaff, AZ (took the R1200C). Fires shut down many of the forests, so I opted not to head north into Utah and westward home. I believe in enforcement for public safety, BUT... I've heard stories where cops get a kick out of ticketing for even a couple of miles over the speed limit. Where's the safety in that?? There'll be good cops, bad cops.

FYI: If you no longer see the speed trap cartoon, it's because the nightly 2am rotation has updated them.

The absolute best answer you can give after being pulled over and the officer asks "Any idea why I pulled you over?" is... "for being stupid."

Officers must get lied to all day long with people thinking they are stupid. For the one or two people that actually own up to their fault, hell why not let those guys off. I've gotten out of 70% of my tickets with a warning or serious reduction at the spot using my "stupid" reply.
