Pacific Northwest trip coming up...any suggestions?

Post by dnorrell »

I will be heading out on a 9-day trip from Colorado up toward the Pacific Northwest on June 24th. I don't really have an agenda in mind...I just want to come down the coast for a bit before heading back east. I would also like to see the giant redwoods. I will be camping the entire time.

Do any of you have any suggestions on campgrounds, rides, sights, etc? All suggestions are welcome!

Den: Thanks for the shot - looks like a great book. Hopefully I can find one around here before I leave.

I have a great book called Destination Highways Washington. You should check out the web site, and maybe even order one. A little expensive, but they did an amazing job finding the best motorcycle roads in the state. I'd be happy to relay the top several if you are interested.

What type of riding do you like to do? What kind of camping and sights?

That sounds like a great source of info. I will have to check out the website.

As far as riding, I just like to get lost in my surroundings. I want to ride the backroads and soak in the sights and smells. When camping, I prefer quiet sights near some source of water so I can take a dip, clean up, and pump out some water with my Sweetwater for the following day. Primitive campsites are preferred...not those places loaded with travel trailers, etc.

Have anything in mind?

The website is great (http://www.destinationhighways.com) the site describes the roads, but doesn't give the road names or directions,.. they want you to buy the book. But, if I have an idea of what kind of route you will be taking I can give you some specific information.

The #1 road is highway 20, from winthrop to rockport. This is the northern east/west mountain pass.
#2 is windy ridge at Mt. St Helens. This is located in the SW portion of the state.
#3 is Castle Rock to Mt. St Helens.
#4 is Randle to Yale. Also in the St Helens area.
#5 is Chelan to 25 Mile creek, in the North Cascades.
#6 is Port Angeles to Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic Peninsula.

There are 345 more listed in the book!

These are all very out of the way highways, and they all have numerous forest service or state camping areas. All of the amazing camping I am familiar with is on mountain tops and about a 20 mintue drive on dirt forst service roads... not the kind of places I would want to take my R1150R.

Those usually are the best campsites. Last year, my trip took me on a number of 20 minute jaunts on gravel roads. I don't mind it...I just take it nice and slow.

Thanks for the info on the roads. I will try to hit some of these while riding around up there. This is just the kind of info I was looking for.

Good raingear...great idea. The only "raingear" I have is the inner layer for the Olympia Airglide 2 jacket and pants. Very effective, but insulated like ski clothes. Great for early springs and late fall here in Colorado, but I tried to wear it the other day and probably lost 6 pounds from sweating - over a 50 minute ride. No thanks. Any recommendations on inexpensive rainwear? ...I might make this question a new thread...

I just got some cheap rain gear from newenough.com. It seems fine to me.

I used to live in the Seattle area. I can highly recommend a ride to Mt St. Helens. The road off I 5 that leads to it is one of the most scenic in the country.

Also, the Olympic peninsula through the Olympic range west of Seattle is gorgeous too.

PNW trip options

Post by sweatmark »

Adam,

Lots of great riding options out here. Probably simpler to chat by phone if you'd like. PM me if you'd like to set up call time.

If you're heading down to NorCal for Redwoods, we have a special route to recommend!
