Gear Post - Summer Pants

Hi! I just saw a pair of BMW pants at the dealer just called 'Summer' pants. They are tan, have cargo pockets and the legs zip off.
Would anyone have experience with these and any idea where else to buy?

I was tempted but they did not have my size...

Their prices are usually pretty good and the customer service level is high. I bought a pair of Gericke mesh pants for summer riding from them a couple of years ago for about $70. They are an open-weave mesh with comfortable armor that fits my stubby frame 5'7"/190 lb frame pretty well and allow me to ride in shorts.

Sonja, I have the tan Summer Pants and love them - I wear them all the time. They don't look 'bikerish" and they're very useful. I do actually use the zip-off feature when I go to the beach. They're also quite cool in the hot weather.

Thanks Challey and Tony. The New Enough website is great. In fact, I just ordered boots from them.

I'm sort of keen on the summer pants because I tried them on and the felt great (I wanted a bigger size, sigh).

I'm glad to know at least one person thinks the zip-off feature is cool!

They seem to be $179 all over, I'll bite the bullet.

I'm with Tony, I have the summer pants too. They are worth the money. Also there are these by Olymipia:

I can't speak for the BMW summer pants, although I have heard others praise them. I do have some of the Olympia gear, including the mesh pants and the Ranger pants. They are well made with good materials. Their Transformer pants are good sellers for them also. All have CE-approved armour in strategic locations.

Disclaimer: I got my gear for letting them use my bike for the catalog shoot the last two years and I know the owners. However, I would not use or recommend them if it wasn't good stuff. Look for a post, maybe later this weekend, from me reviewing my latest Olympia outfit. I like the AST jacket and Ranger pant combo enough that I have a perfectly good 2-piece Aerostich not being used!

Olympia is great stuff also - well made and a good value. I have the Mustang pants - they look like a pair of jeans. If anyone is going to the MOA in VT I'm sure they'll be there. Karilea Rhea, one of the owners was in OH last year and helped me out with the mustangs. She was great. IIRC, she had the Olympia set up as part of Bob's BMW's booth.

The BMW Airflow 2 is a great suit also. I have it in black and it's practically like having A/C.

For summer - like Texas or Florida summer - check out the link below from Bohn. I wish there was a place around town that sold them so I could try them on first because I think they rate them by men's sizes. But I like the Bohn idea (although still researching it) because :
1. you can wear them under the pants of your choice, so there is flexibility in your choice of clothing (obviously a must for us girls).

2. you don't have to wear men's clothing (obviously a plus for us girls!!)

Also: check out this link for wearing under the shirt/jacket of your choice. Actually, they have a lot of stuff for those of us who suffer through the humidity and heat . After my last ride in 94 degree weather, I knew I was going to have to find some alternatives in protective wear or either stop riding between 8:00am and 8:00pm or ride without protection.

Uh...ick.

Sorry, really, but it would never occur to me to wear this stuff. At least w/ overpants, you can wear shorts underneath and take them off.

What the heck do you do with that stuff when you stop and get off the bike?

Interested in hearing from anyone who uses them. I must be missing the obvious benefits.

I guess when you stop and get off the bike, you would take it off like you would a jacket. The site said that most people wear a micro fiber type t-shirt under it (and obviously a breathable shirt over it). I can see how the pants might pose a different problem. I suppose it would depend on what your trip for the day consisted of. I doubt I would wear it to the store or to work, but on an all day ride with home, camping or a motel/hotel as my final stop, I think it would work. I'm just still looking for options for long trips in the hot weather down here. The mesh overpants that I've seen/tried on for women are not very comfortable and are pretty high waisted. The men's stuff doesn't work for me. So, until I can find the right thing(s), I'll just stick with jeans.

I never really trusted mesh pants. My Olympia mesh pants are as good as any but didn't feel very protective after my 'Stich. I got a pair of Bohn mesh armoured shorts for under the mesh pants and felt more protected. They are made to wear under jeans, etc. The mesh armoured shorts with mesh pants passes a lot of air!

Of course, I don't take off the mesh pants during breaks while riding with the mesh shorts either. That would be horrible for everyone concerned!

A question regarding the Summer pants...

I too was looking at them at the dealer recently. My understanding is that they are to be used as stand-alone pants.

My question is; would using them as over-pants be completly out of the question? (Insofar as, I'm going to work and have uniform pants on under the summer pants).

Are they oo restrictive, etc?

When I tried them, on the attraction was they fit like real pants.
I'm sure you could use them as overpants if you buy a size bigger, but I think these are meant to wear as 'only pants' thus the zip-off leg feature.
