Marietta Madness - Bash Rides

Post by MikeCam »

Friday: US33/US11/VA 259 to Baker, WV meet with R4R&R. Uneventful mostly slab, straight and tame. Light traffic and one dead chicken. WV 55, Cunningham Lane, Old Fields Road, Greenleaf Gap and Grant Mountain to Highlands plateau. Twisty and wicked, no chickens. WV93- 20 degree temperature drop and near freezing (37-38 degrees) rain on coal dusted roads behind many fast moving trucks - Blackwater Brewery Break for Hot Tea (seriously). US 219 to Elkins. Fog, rain, wind and some traffic. Steady drizzle on arrival at Elkins MacDonalds to meet DYZKSD (Brian). US33/US119/WV47. Sunlight breaks through, rain goes away and WV 47 is a great, twisty, curvy, hilly, light traffic highway. Best ride of the day. Arrive Marietta at 7 pm.

Saturday: Others have better stories.

Sunday: slab to US60 East. Then twisty mountain switchbacks and light traffic leads tothe overall best ride in 3 years. Belle, WV to Gauley Bridge is river level. Gauley Bridge to Ansted is up, up, up the mountain and tight turns all the way for 30 miles. Ansted to Rainelle is hill highlands and a steep descent into Greenbrier River Valley. Rainelle to Lewisburg is pretty, open fields and hill country but heavy traffic. Slab to Lexington for times sake. US60 again over Blue Ridge - stuck behind a minivan all the way to Amherst.
