I've been around since the second month the board was up. (want proof? how many of you remember the first "Darth"?) (the British one, not the Texan) I have the honor of being the the first signed poster to be flamed (Don't ever call a BMW MC a "beemer"). I remember the first drama queen who left the site because he was miffed (the above mentioned "Darth").

I'm not a "member" because of my seemingly continuous financial calamities and the fact that I don't own a BMW. I practically live in "Off Topic" because I don't own a BMW and because I really like you guys - sometimes especially when I disagree with you!

Doug, would you take the same tact if you were running a bar or coffee shop? If you did, how long would you expect to stay in business?

Dude, you've got a community here. Is it what you envisioned? Nope. But then again neither is your wife (nobody's is). That doesn't keep her from being completely wonderful, though, does it?

Ok, cool. You've posted house rules over the bar before. Now you've put up an even bigger sign. Cool. You are even waving around the bat you had under the bar. Not cool! You can control the atmosphere here with the velvet ropes and the bouncers, and that's cool with those who get passage in, but what about those left standing at the curb? Is that what you envisioned?

My advise: Be careful on enforcing those rules. Make sure to punish only the worst enfractions. When you do choose enforcement, just simply nuke or move the offending post/thread. Don't appologize, just do it! (Bouncers, remember?) Don't advise the offending poster, they knew what the rules were and what they did. If they crybaby, nuke the postwhere they crybabied. No explaination needed.

Yeah, I know. A lot of you reading this are thinking "That's too harsh! That's just arbitrary!" So what? So is the bouncer at your favorite club. Bet you respect him, though, huh?

Threatening to ban people who are connected via non-static IP's is a hollow threat (unless you want to take out entire regions). If you going to sweep up, use the broom to sweep up! Don't threatren to break out the yard blower!

OK, enough of this BS!
Doug - It's a living thing, dude. Ya gotta expect some foibles.
Mods - Cross your arms and BE the Bouncers!
Guys - Have your fun but have some respect, huh? Oh, and when you do step over the line, for God's sake don't whine when the "bouncers" put a stop to it! You wouldn't do that at your favorite pub, would you?
Dal - Finish the story, dude! It's killing us!

Dallara,

I'm a design engineer. I was a designer on Bill Lear' steam cars and bus in 1970. I love design stories......please, finish the story. I find your relating the design challenges faced by the NR500 team fascinating.

If I read one more post on "when can I change to synthetic oil?" or "When does the oil burning stop?" or worse "What level should the oil be in the window?" ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Please continue the story!

Re: I'll be happy to...

For the record, I never told anyone that their material had to be only r1150r in nature. I said that they should be put in the correct section and that the posts should be written with dignity and respect. Am I asking too much?

Please read this:
http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=4610

Oh, and toole, shes more.

Dallara wrote:I'll be happy to "finish it off", Biff's R...

Wherever... Be it in "Off Topic" or elsewhere... If the moderators, etc. will just tell me where, when, and how, etc.

I have been SUMMARILY instructed not to post non-R-1150-R material, period. If I choose to post non-R-1150-R material I run the risk of being "banned" permanently from this site despite paying for a "lifetime" membership.

If one of the moderators, or the site owner, gives me the "go-ahead" to finish the Honda NR-500 saga I will be happy to do so... Otherwise...

Doug -
Thanks for the "For the record..." post.

In the spirit of seeking clarification so we can do a better job of posting topics to the proper forum...
You say:
For the record, I never told anyone that their material had to be only r1150r in nature. I said that they should be put in the correct section...
So far, so good.

But...in the header for the Main R1150r section you specify:
This is the main section for the R1150R website. Only R1150R (or at least motorycle-based) topics should go in here.
"...or at least motorcycle related.." is the key phrase here for purposes of my question.

Obviously the Honda NR-500 is a motorcycle.
And you say it is OK in the Main section ("...or at least motorcycle related...").
But you also say we should post to the "correct section", then shuffle it off to "Off-Topic".

In the defintion for Off-Topic you specify "...Non-R1150R or even bike related stuff goes in here...". Now I'm really getting confused.

I have several more posts planned for my "Eye Candy" thread on the Main Section. It's all about motorcycles but little if any content on R1150R's. Is it in the right place? If not why not, given the above?

I do understand the "It's my football, play by my rules or leave" dictum. I'm not crazy about that approach but I can live with it (or choose to leave). But at least give us clear & consistently applied "rules."

Sometimes I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer...so, what am I missing?

Oh! I get it now! This is all a big publicity stunt to get us to buy Alan's book!

Yeah, go ahead and tease us, then drop off. You must be giving Doug a cut from the royalties too.

Yes! Now it's coming to light! You guys really live in the same town in Iowa and operate this bike publishing business out of the basement and are....like..lifelong friends.

YES! I'm onto you guys!

Darth, since you seem to be on top of clarifying the topic descriptions, why dont you write up some for us that are very clear and I'll be happy to change them.
Well, that could be an option but it doesn't answer the question I asked.
There could be a great future for both you and Whaycock with his non-answer to my question yesterday. Straight talk is certainly at a premium.

Seriously, I see no problem with the way they are worded now, they seem clear to me and I've heard no one question what they mean. Just a very recent tendancy to start "interpreting" them to suit an agenda and the capricious moving of the Honda NR-500 post, among others; and some that were zapped altogether.

And now I see this response from Doug to Dave on my "Please Read Guys" thread:
I dont really mind "motorcycle-related stuff" in the r1150r section, as long as it somehow can relate to the r1150r - a new helmet specificially has nothing to do with the R, but it is related because most people wear a helmet while riding.
I know it's your football but that doesn't wash with your own specifications for the Main Section:
This is the main section for the R1150R website. Only R1150R (or at least motorycle-based) topics should go in here.
"...Or at least motorcycle-based topics" seems clear and un-ambiguous to me. No need for re-writing, no need for interpretation. Are you wanting now to change that?

Still leaving the questions I asked above, plus a new one:
Do you want us to do what you "say" or do what you "want"?

If you think the Topic Specs need a re-write, I could take a swing at that for you, but for now I'd just like a straight answer.
Thanks,
Dave

Doug and Darth -

Just a suggestion, based on what I've gleaned from Doug's prior posts:

R1150R Forum - Topics related to the ownership, maintenance, equipping, operation, and riding of the R1150R.

Off-Topic Forum - All other motorcycle related topics.

Pat's Place - Topics containing inappropriate images or content, even if motorcycle related, and all topics that are not motorcycle related.

I hope this is helpful.

Doug - you forgot to add "and communicate the changes."

Sorry if I am sounding petty, but there has been a lot more non-R1150R stuff in the R1150R section up to now. I am just confused why Dallara's Honda related post seems to be a flashpoint at this point in time.

Gord, it was jsut the spark, this has been going on for a while and I've been meaning to post something about it. It looks like everyone knows whats going on now. If you are not clear, I've posted a "rules" message in the off topic section.

"Guest" -
I may totally support whayt you say...matter of fact I do.
But if you have any intent or desire of swaying opinion in your direction, you really should register and sign on with your name, or at least a recognizable "handle".
When you choose anonimity you water down the effectiveness of your points to near nil.
My guess is you are actually a member we would all recognize.
And I would like to send you a PM.
So come on, what do you say...?
If you won't do this, send me an email at [email protected] and I promise I won't pass on your name or address.

Aw, come on, Darth...

You know who that is (and it's not me...).

You can tell from the writing style, and I think I fully understand why he is posting as a guest. It's a good test to see how the "Posting Police" will react to dissenting views. With the rampant post deletions without notice or explanation of recent weeks I can see the wisdom of posting as a guest...

No, I really don't know who it is. The writing style is familiar and he/she obviously knows their stuff but I can't catch it.

And shouldn't have to...I still say log on and say your piece.
What's to worry about...getting it zapped into oblivion?

Oh I dont even really read guest replies. I read member replies. I only leave guest open in case someone wants to post a real message and doesnt want to bother with registration. if its annoying I'm just going to delete it. Guests have no voice IMO.
