Sadly it’s goodbye from me …

Events have overtaken me and I have decided to retire from biking for the foreseeable future.

It’s a long storey but we all know we’re playing the numbers game, especially when commuting. I’m sick of seeing car drivers driving down the road reading the paper or chatting on their phones completely unaware of what’s going on aground them. If they drift across lanes or pull out and don’t see you its just a little inconvenient bump for them and its life threatening for us. The final straw was reading about Yahooboy and seeing his family’s comments on this forum – that will stay with me for a long time and I could just imagine my family’s comments if the same happened to me. It’s like a big neon sign appeared that read “If/when it happens to you will it have been worth it and will your wife and kids think it was worth it?” and I just can’t answer in the affirmative. My family have supported my 24 year long passion for bikes because they support me, like Yahooboy’s family supported him, but now it’s time to adjust my priorities and pay back their support. I’ve thought long and hard about this but really it’s a no-brainer.

Biking has been good to me and I’ve had some magic times over the last quarter of a century. I would just like to thank all the people I’ve chatted to as part of this great forum when I had my Roadster and subsequently when I got my Rockster. You lot are a great bunch of people and I wish you all the very best for the future

Rainbow Motorcycles in Rotherham (UK) have also been brilliant to me over the last 10 years I’ve been using then and I whole heartedly recommend them to anyone. They have totally rectified all issues I’ve ever had with my bikes and provided a level of service that is all too rare in any industry let alone the motorcycle industry.

I’ve decided to put my Rockster back to standard to sell so if anyone in the UK is interested in a carbon fibre Remus Revolution exhaust, Remus Y-piece, BB-Power chip for dual spark engine, RS air inlets and my Autocom intercom all of which are in excellent condition then just message me. Of course do the same if you’re interested in the bike as well!

Is there any way you can keep it for just weekend fun? I know there are lots of cars regardless but usually people just less rushed and hopefully have more time to pay attention to things rather than just getting to work during the work week. I guess it's just my wishful thinking.

I'm sure your decision did not come easily. I'm also sure that no one wants to talk you into continuing to ride only to have something bad occur. However, the thought about changing the time (weekends) of when you ride makes sense to me, or perhaps a dirt bike?

In any case, I'm always sorry to see someone leave biking, especially if they have been in it a long time.

Difficult decision. It sounds like you've had many years of enjoyable riding and the support from family certainly makes a difference.

Weekends and dirtbiking sound like viable options, should you decide to get back in the saddle for a few hours of fun.

It's a sad day when we have to read of accidents that have befallen us.

It's a sad day also when one of us comes to his senses......
and as a result, bails from the biking scene......
leaving the rest of us to continue to tempt fate.

Both my brothers got M/C's after I did. I ride more in 1 year than my younger brother (`87 Shadow 500) has in 15yrs. Older brother just sold his Honda 647 Hawk and quit for good citing "back problems". He wasn't riding much anyway, so it's no big deal.

I couldn't give up M/C's any more than I could give up women (uhhh . . um . . . like my wife Ann). Both necessities are potentially dangerous . . . but how can you live without them???

About 15 years ago I had the unpleasant luck to be side swiped by a driver who pulled over into my lane. I was fortunate that a grassy landing spot was available. My injuries were minor, but it was a long time before I got back in the saddle.

I ride now with the full support of my family. But, having two small chlidren, I completely understand.

I respect your decision . I have stopped commuting to work as much as i have use to , due to the three lanes of solid traffic rolling toward the City of Toronto half asleep . Flicking there cigarette butts at me !
Weaving in and out aimlessly , as there always trying to be first in line !
I tend save my rides for an all day ride during the weekend ,heading to the north always looking for new back roads to explore .

In spring during a long winter without riding , The first day back on the road i'm full of excitment and question (what if !) ,but my confidence as an experienced rider always leads me back on the road !

Do what you have to ! Live a long life and enjoy your family !

When I got back into the saddle about 15 years ago, my wife supported me (and still does), but was wondering why. I told her that life was too short. It took me 20 years to become 20 years old, but only 10 years to become 30 years old and I did not want to turn 70 and wish I would have done it.

It's your call and sounds like you are content, but don't be suprised if the passion bites you in the backside and you find yourself back in the saddle. I never dress for the ride, I dress for the fall but even then, it's a chance - no doubt about it.
