TX Big Bend Bash - end of Oct

Post by Acacia »

There has not been much news on this adventure for some time - refer to the Group ride section.

I am still keen on doing it - will probably do it anyway.

What do others who were interested think?

Acacia,
I was hoping to do this one, but I am committed to going to the HSTA's Hill Country event in Kerrville the following weekend, Nov. 4-6th, and I just can't do both. My friend LadyBeemer (Linda) also can't go.

I DO plan on going to the HSTA's annual Big Bend bash in February. Check out http://www.Ridetherio.com It's open to all brands of bikes, there are a great bunch of folks in the HSTA, and I can guarantee you'll have a hoot. Lots of folks in your next of the woods go. If you've never seen the Big Bend, this is the way to do it. In the middle of winter, in the middle of nowhere ...

My apologies to all...

Post by dallara »

Hi, Guys...

First off, my sincerest apologies to all for getting so behind on this ride. No excuses... Though I feel I had some good reasons. To put it simply, sometimes family has to be a priority, and this has been one of those times.

Anyway, I still am planning on attending... Though I have not spun so much as a single mile on my Beemer since early August. I hope to have it prepped and ready for the Big Bend Ride and join all who are going in dusting off some apexes!

Seems we have lost some of those previously interested to various other reasons, commitments, etc. Probably my fault for dropping the ball somewhat, and if that's the case I am truly sorry. That was never my intention.

Right now it looks like we have a few Beemers, a Honda Superhawk, a KLR-650, and a couple of Harleys making the trek... We unfortunately lost one participant who would have been there on a Triumph Sprint ST because he crashed and totalled it. Good news is that he is fine... Just wrote off his ride. :(

Hopefully I will be getting back into the swing of things and dropping in here more often... (though some may not consider that a "good" thing... )

Take care, Folks... and let's hope we have a good turnout for the Fall Big Bend Ride!

Cheers!

No apologies necessary. We knew you were having a rough time. Just stepping up to the plate to find out where to help. A group ride cannot expect one person to do all the work.

There may be fewer riders, but numbers are not the make of break in the enjoyment.

Acacia...

Post by dallara »

Hey, Acacia (Brian)...

I really appreciate that, and right now I need all the help I can get. My hands are a bit full... What with getting my Mom through all the probate, etc., and with dealerships succession agreements, factory reps (for three franchises!), account changeovers, etc., etc., etc.... You always think you have all the details worked out, but I never imagined what all this sort of changeover entailed... and what finks the bloody IRS and auto makers can be!

Anyway, it's a terrible excuse, but I am loaded up at the moment.

Any help would be appreciated - from logistical, like the room blocks, etc. and organizing when and where we all meet up, and how, to any other details anybody can think of.

On another note, I originally planned to be out ther on Thursday, but that is beginning to look like an impossibilty (just for me) now. Earliest I can possibly depart South Texas is Thursday evening about 7:00 pm, and it's a looooooooooooooong haul out there from here, so best I can probably do for meeting up is early Friday morning.

Drop a note out on the e-mail mailing list with any ideas you have, or PM me here. I may not get back to it until tonight, but I will reply as soon as I can.

Thanks!

Dallara, wish I could get to Alpine on Thursday and help with the planning. In any event, I will be there at the Ramada Limited Friday, about 5:00 P.M.. Our fabled Darthrider is unable to attend. In his honor, I propose a social hour Friday evening in my room (about 5:00P.M.). As has been suggested elsewhere, I'll supply the pizza or nachos, whatever works. Believe we can do some good planning during that time. Later, Moose

Hey, Moose...

Right now it looks like the earliest I can leave Corpus Christi for Alpine is now about 5:00 or 6:00 pm. It's about 550 miles from here to Alpine, so I figure with fuel stops, etc. - and driving it all at night - the best I would want to try is getting there in about 7 to 9 hours, which would put me into Alpine in the wee hours of the morning... Much of this depends on if anybody from down this way decides to wait around for when I leave, and if we need to divert from path to meet up with anybody along the way.

Still, I hope to be onsite in Alpine Friday morning... That is unless something crashes my entire plans for attending, which these days is always possible unfortunately.

As for the "Social Hour" on Friday evening, that sounds great!

However, I wonder if any of the early arrivers (read those who get to Alpine on Thursday, like Dean!) will want to cut their riding short on Friday to get kenneled up so early as 5:00 pm!!!

No doubt they will want to push the riding until dark, at least, and isn't that the last weekend of Daylight Savings time?

Might need to push the "Social Hour" time back to about 7:00 pm, at least...

One other note... One of the reasons my buddy Doug suggested the Ramada in Alpine is that it has a *BAR*!!! :smt030 :smt031 :smt026

Hence, we may not need to mess up anybody's room...

Yet, I am more than happy to go for your invitation, or even to offer up my room as the sacrificial lamb... Lord knows I will have a bottle of single malt stashed away in my bags somewhere. Sometimes I wonder if it is more important than an American Express card...

Now if I can just find the time to get the Blue Beak prepped and ready...

Cheers!

Dallara, if 5:00 P.M. is too early, no problem. Any time Friday evening will work. Wonder if they have pizza in the bar????? I might have a little something in my cases as well. Will have to check them in Alpine. Just let me know how I can help. Moose

Okay, Latest Update...

Post by dallara »

Okay, latest update from the South Texas contingent of the Big Bend ride...

If all goes as planned there will be four of us (Doug Smith and his Superhawk, Dave Mock and his Road King, Randy Poelma and his KLR-650, and ol' Dallara here with his trusty, dusty Blue Beak) coming from down this way.

Poelma and I will be towing out, using either a Suburban or a Ford Crew Cab diesel, a trailer capable of hauling four to six bikes (big flatbed) with the R-1150-R and KLR onboard. We will be picking Mock and Road King and Doug and his Superhawk up en route (which will eat up a bit of time, stopping and loading and the like...).

I know, I know... I can hear it now... "Trailering your bikes out! What are you guys? Pansy P*ssies!"

Well, we would all prefer to ride, but a couple of things is pushing us the towing route:

1.) None of us wants to simply cook off perfectly good tires droning down the interstate.

2.) We figure we can make the transfer faster - because the trucks have incredible ranges (over 350 miles a tankful), and arrived more ready and refreshed since we can swap off driving chores and maybe get some sleep en route.

3.) We can haul all our gear, plus some *REAL* tools and spares (just in case), without having to pack the bikes down so much.

4.) I always prefer to have some sort of "chase/pick-up" vehicle on these more far ranging rides with a number of riders just incase somebody breaks down or has a get-off (heaven forbid). Having the ability to go get a recovery vehicle for retrieval of a busted scooter has been a savior on a couple of these kinds of rides.

5.) We have to really make time coming home to get where we need to be, so see reason #2.

We're snagging two rooms at the Ramada for us, so we should be there, ready to ride, Friday morning. Everyone on the mailing list has my cell phone number, and most everybody on that list has their cell numbers on there, too, so we should be able to use those to coordinate.

Doug may have to ride out, if he has to stop over in Leakey to see his Dad on Thursday night, but then he still plans to be in Alpine by mid-day on Friday if that occurs.

I will send this around ont he mailing list tonight.

Cheers!

What a weak set of excuses! You will have gotten halfway there by the time you were finished loading all the bikes and left the city limits! With diesel at $3.50 a gallon and 10 mpg towing? You wear suspenders and a belt too? Guess there is some merit in the night part of your 'ride'.

You are not going to live this one down! Going for a ride and you then trailer - and bring a trailer in case of ... SHEESH!

Riding there and back is all a part of the ride! Some do, some don't- each to their own fun.

I just knew...

Post by dallara »

I just knew I was going to take a tongue lashing for the trailering deal... #-o

Damn, first time in mucho years I have done such a thing... But what did I expect... :smt090

However, I guess I better try and make the best of this I can... :smt102

Now, Acacia... You banged me with the following:
What a weak set of excuses! You will have gotten halfway there by the time you were finished loading all the bikes and left the city limits!
Nah! We are going to load the Corpus bikes the night before...

Now, in a way... Ya' need to think about this one:
With diesel at $3.50 a gallon and 10 mpg towing?
Well, two points here...

We will stop a lot less because the gasoline engined Suburban or the diesel Ford Crew Cab either one will go 350+ miles ot the tankful, whereas poor Doug's Superhawk is flying on fumes at 115 miles...

But, better yet... Consider this...

Diesel at $3.50 a gallon and 10 miles per gallon, right?

How is that really much different than *FOUR* bikes burning $3.50 premium unleaded at 40 miles per gallon... Seems like kind of wash to me...   :smt104

Then:
You wear suspenders and a belt too?
Uh... Well... No...

But should I leave my riding gear, helmet, tool kit, tire patch kit, first aid kit, etc. at home, too?
Guess there is some merit in the night part of your 'ride'.
Yeah, we'll get some sleep so we can be ready to ride Friday morning!
You are not going to live this one down!
Oh, I know that... Unless...
Going for a ride and you then trailer - and bring a trailer in case of ... SHEESH!
*YOUR* bike breaking down or you falling off...      :p
Riding there and back is all a part of the ride!
Couldn't agree with you more, and that was the original plan... But Doug and I have a bit of a problem...

Our highway cruise velocity is around 85+ MPH, whereas Dave hates to string his poor, defenseless, agricultural Hardly-Ableson much past 75-80 MPH on the super slab, and poor ol' Randy's Kwacker KLR-650 is pretty much strung out and panting at 75 MPH... Oh, it'll go 85 MPH, but it doesn't like it for long...

And all of us are tired of cooking off expensive motorcycle tire miles droning down the interstates like the endless drone-fest of I-10 in West Texas... In this instance we decided it was better to burn off a small percentage of those 40,000 mile truck tires rather than flat-center tires like Metzler Z-6's that only have about 3,000 miles left in 'em! \:D/

But this was below the belt...
Some do, some don't- each to their own fun.
We all have done the "drone"... Too many times. We just decided this time it would be more fun to ride together and laugh a lot in the truck on the way so we could ride up there sans our saddle bags, tank bags, etc. and save the tires for the fun of drilling apexes like snipers...

Somehow I figure we'll have loads of fun!

(and I hope we both know this is all good-natured bantering... :smt109 )

Cheers!

Absolutely! Chain pulling all the way! Nothing but. Life can be miserable without some good natured fun - and if anyone opens the door - they need to expect some!

Imagine riding all the way there to find a bunch that look and act as though they were weaned on dill pickels and vinegar? And, why wait till we get there to start the fun?

Now you guys......quit getting all over Dallara's arse, he has some good, sound reasons. Let me share the following which I sent to him most recently.......

Doug......I'm sometimes, at least the first time around, made fun off for trailering. Interesting enough I do it for ythe same reasons and because most of my time is at a premium and I like to enjoy the rides and the time with my friends.

Also interestingly enough I'm one of the ones that hauls the most distance ~ 1000+ miles to get to the Bash which is normally 200 to 300 miles for the rest......

Well good luck and have fun......post some pics along with fish stories.
Please be safe.......

I you don't let him be I will summon the flees of a thousand camels to invade your furry areas. Dallara, on the other hand will trailer, and if you sufer a mechanical breakdown will ignore you like a turd by the side of the road and leave your sorry arse as bait for the buzzards.

Yo', Boxermania!

Brudda, there ya' were when I needed ya'!!! :smt031

But I have to say... No matter how much razzing I take for "trailering" out there I would *NEVER* ignore a fellow rider in need...

However... I would reserve the right to *RAZZ* them unmercifully, and quite publicly of course, if they required the use of the truck and trailer I so thoughtfully provided!!! \:D/

Adolfo... Given our exchanges in the past, and your obvious love and lust for endless tinkering (like me...), I have genuine sadness you will not be joining us for the Fall Big Bend ride... Somehow or another we need to find a good time to go riding somewhere, sometime, together! :smt023

Take care, my fellow rational Brudda'!

Cheers!

Dallara....I posted to have a gathering in the Texas Hill country in the near future, with Darth providing the beer and Moose the pizza.

Darth grunted that it was a good idea, Moose hasn't been heard from. BTW the rest of us will partake of the goodies and tell lies.

Oh.....I can't wait........... 8) 8)

Dallara,

Do you think boxermania will 'trailer' to the Hill Country? I have a sneaking suspicion he would - but hide the trailer somewhere so we dont find out!
