Jump start

Post by turrider »

Good Afternoon,

Is there a way to jump start battery w/o removing the tank ? As usual after winter, battery is dead so it won’t crank! Last ride was in february for three hours, no issues of charge. Now what I read is 9.6 Volts and I had removed the battery. Is there a way to jump starts w/o removing all ?

You have to use moto specific jumpers (much smaller alligator connectors or make some up). connect the + to the battery and then the - neg. to a good ground on the moto like the engine. I carry moto spec jumpers just for that reason.

The other way of course is to charge the battery until it will support a start.

If you remove the cover on the starter, you have access to the hot, or positive terminal of the starter .
Ground to a starter attach bolt or nut .

turrider, The 9.6 Volt reading is a dead battery that will not come back after charging, especially when it has remained in that discharged state for many weeks where destructive battery plate Sulfation can be irreversible. For a jump start the plastic starter cover removal is the best way to connect the Red jumper to the upper red battery wire solenoid copper terminal. Before you securely connect the black negative jumper to an unpainted bolt head or the exhaust crossover pipe clamp protrusion, be very careful that the jumper clamp is securely connected ONCE and firmly (like a mousetrap) to minimize/eliminate voltage spikes. Also consider that the weight of either jumper cable or engine vibration does NOT dislodge them, creating sputtering, sparking high amperage voltage spikes and/or a short circuit that could damage the alternator ($$$) of the starting vehicle, even though it is not running. It goes without saying that when the bike starts you should be careful handling the 2 clamps in that they do not touch while still connected to the donor battery. It is best to have an assistant disconnect the donor negative clamp right after you disconnect the bike's negative clamp.
Best advice is to make the connections with the donor vehicle not running, then start the donor engine and let it run a few minutes to put a partial charge on the bike battery, lessening the current draw when you hit the starter.

Good Afternoon CycleRob,

Oh yes. the battery is dead. Even after charging it did not crank. So I had ordered a Bosch M4. Weight of the cable is a good hint btw. I just copied all the steps to my mobile

Dear AZBMWRIDER, I will remove the cover and try to locate those.

Mr. Kirby, what brand do you recommend (if I can find it here is a big question mark btw)

Aerostich 6' Jumper Cables Aerostich 6' Jumper Cables. This is what I use but an amazon search could turn up more options. I've had my for years and used them to start other motos from mine. Compact w/bag..$24

I am on the road allot so feel they are worth the wt to have. Trying to use auto type is not so pretty good.
