1150r very red muffler !

Post by turrider »

Good Morning,

Yesterday, I just wanted to travel around in the morning. Prepared everything, started the engine, it died. Started it again, died. Then with few adjustments for idling, it started to run, with coughing. Not frequently, but as if discharging periodically.

Then, I noticed that exhaust is not giving out smoke, then I realised a hot air from below, then the following situation, where the first muffler rear end is redddd !

This morning, I had removed exhaust pipe, then the first muffler. Controlled the air in and air out with compressor, everything seems fine. What should I do ?

Do we have a method to clean the pipe ? The muffler ? Why it is red ?

I tought that exhaust is not giving the burnt gas outside.

That glowing thing is the catalytic converter. It was glowing red because a LOT of unburned fuel made it to that point. Most likely your engine is misfiring (the coughing you mentioned). You need some help determining why the engine was running rough.

Not the first time reported here.... perhaps not the solution to your problem, but the first thing to check.

Good Afternoon Sweatmark,

Yep, that was awesome and resolved the issue. Thank you very much, power of the forum.

Last week I had removed the fuel tank to charge the battery before I ride during the season. I had connected QD's and now I found from the links that I pulled the throttle cable cap up-n-out of it's adjuster ferrule's socket on the right hand side. Throttle position sensor was misinformed, causing unsynchronised firing on lean mixture.

Great, let's see what happens, I need to reinstall exhaust system.

A friend of mine had that happen on his 1150 GS; it turned out to be that he inadvertently left his enrichener ("choke") on; he told me it took about 15 minutes for the Cat to turn red.
