HOV/Express lanes: more or less dangerous?

Fewer cars and fewer on/off ramps but higher speed ... what's your experience/opinion?

Fewer cars would make it safer to me. HOV all the way!

I utilize the HOV lanes, but am always watching for someone to pull out in front of me when the other lanes are jammed.

Basically, I ride it like any other lane... They're all trying to kill me.
