The hydraulic clutch on this bike should not be hard to operate, the lightest I've had .
I think you need to start looking at the clutch system .
I would start with a fluid flush .
Then see how it operates .
Was the bike sitting for an extended period of time unridden ???

No, it has been in daily use. Do you ment swapping out the gearoil? Is it wet clutch on this bike?

It's a dry clutch. Not normal for the neutral light to come on. I believe he is suggesting to replace the fluid in the clutch line. It's a hydraulic clutch and needs to be flushed. I believe the maintenance is every other year. Uses DOT4 brake fluid. Of course, it would be wise to replace the transmission oil as well as final drive and engine oil on a new purchase. Brake fluid as well.

Thanks, I will flush the clutch system and change out the gearoil first. The final drive has new oil.
Stupid with the neutral light who comes on all the time:-)

This may or may not apply to the oilhead bikes .
The airhead bikes had a diode in the starter relay, if it went bad, allowed current flow in both directions, the neutral light would do the same thing as the OP described .
I don't have a wiring diagram for these bikes .
Can someone check to see if the starter relay has a diode .
