Hey there guys,
I'm riding a sweet 2004 R1150R Rockster.
I recently picked up a BMW Badge Running Light/Signal kit. It hasn't been delivered yet, but I was wondering if any of you all-stars had put this product on your bike. The directions it comes with are meant for the S1000RR, which I imagine is slightly different set up than the 1150's we're rocking.
I was curious if anyone had any pointers or perhaps a how-to? I'll be sure to document my install for everyone else's benefit.
In the mean time, here the S1000RR directions:
BMW S1000RR Instructions-
Orange wire – Positive turn signal (Blue/Red on turn signal harness)
Brown Wire- Negative turn signal (Brown wire on turn signal harness)
Blue wire- Connect to ignition plug (Red/gray wire on black ignition plug). This plug is located on the right side, behind the right fairing, in the opening in the frame.
Repeat the following on both sides
1. Remove fairings, then remove roundel.
2. Drill hole (~1/2”) in the middle of the roundel mounting area.
3. Run the wires of the plexi emblem through the hole and secure with double sided tape, and the attached the original roundel (after removing the remaining original adhesive) and attach with double sided tape.
4. Connect the blue wire to the red/gray ignition wire mentioned above.
5. Run wires from right and left fairings to ignition- here are pictures of where wires should be run left fairing to right-
6. Connect emblem orange wire to red/blue turn signal positive wire, and connect the emblem brown wire to brown wire of turn signal ground wire.
7. Secure all components, keep resistor (rectangular block in heat shrink), and reassemble fairings.

Considered the edge-lit Roundel thing myself a few years back:
1. An R1150R member here put together a custom bike, under-tail exhaust, PIAA lights in place of turn signals, and Z4 side markers (Roundels) installed in the R1150R oil cooler covers.
2. There are several aftermarket options for LED Roundels. I'm leaning towards the Schroedies for our F800S.

3. Challenge for the R1150R oil covers Roundel location is mounting depth. Back when I was jonesing for the disco Roundels, I placed some modeling clay under the oil cooler cover for depth measure not. Reinstalled the cover, ensured it was seated correctly and fastened in place, then removed cover to assess the allowable install depth. And there's not very much. IIRC maybe 1/4" <edited>. The oil cooler mount is stout fiber-reinforced plastic, so you're looking at Dremel surgery if you can find a lighted Roundel kit with shallow mount depth.

Oh BTW, my original intent was to use the Kisan SM-5 SignalMinder's vectraLIGHT connectors to source turn signal and marker light power. Bought the phone jack crimp tool and male connectors, plus 4-conductor phone cord. Cord would run from fuse box to each oil cooler cover, kinda messy install IMO. But my puppy-like mind got distracted by some other crazy idea and the lighted Roundel was filed.

Thanks for the advice, I was thinking it was going to be a bit tight. I didn't know about the plastic covers being so hard, I'll have to break out my kryponite drill bit.

Hey guys,
Finally an update!
I got the products installed them and they look and function great. I've gotten a ton of compliments, especially from the other BMW riders. As an example, I rode up to Max BMW a couple weeks ago and the boys in the shop loved the lights.
I'm making a "how to" for the product (it'll be R1150R centric...but I think it'll apply to all the 1150's as the wiring didn't really change).
All said and done, my estimate is that it should should take an experienced person about an hour to do the install. I spent more than an hour on it, I have an excuse... I'm a huge dummy. Most of my time was spent tracking down where the wires were on the Rockster and working in a tight spaces. That was before, I got the bright idea to just extend the wires with connections (cost about $5.00 for that...and now all the colors allign).
On a scale of difficult it is about a three.
I recommend using "We Ride Motorsports" They had the cheapest prices and amazing tech/customer support. You should be able to find them other places too. But when I looked for them they were more expensive elsewhere.

Parts:
1. 2 LED Light (sold as pairs & available at We Ride Motorsports)
a.Two parts: Harness & Light
i.NOTE: the two are connected by a three prong unit that screws it…it sticks the first time it is unscrewed.

2. 14 Red (18 guage) wire crimp connectors
a.You will use these to extend the native wires on the bike. Otherwise it is pretty tight to directly connect them
i.NOTE: Buy extra, you’ll mess it up.

3. 5 BLUE Blade quick Connects (16 gauge wire quick connects)
a. You will put two 18 gauge wires into the receiving end of this. Specifically the native wires of the bike. We are using the BLUE ones because it is impossible to force two 18 gauge wires into a red quick disconnect

4. 5 RED Blade quick Connects (18 gauge wire quick connects)
a. You will put the wires from the LED harness into these. The RED male quick disconnects will fit into the BLUE female quick disconnects.

5. Crimper to connect wires to connectors and quick disconnects.
6. (Optional) Electrical Tape Shrink Wrap & tubing as your see fit.
7. (Optional) I recommend you buy all weather Connections and quick disconnects,
8. (Optional) if you do go with all weather, be sure to have access to a heat gun so you can shrink wrap it.
9. (Mandatory) 1 to 2 hours & a six pack.

Quick overview:
To who all shall see these presents, greetings: The plan today is to mount and connect the LED lights to our native blinkers. This is designed for a BMW R1150R Rockster, although it should be the same on all 1150’s and 1100’s, and 1200’s as the wiring didn’t change between these models significantly.
• Phase 1: Remove oil covers from the bike. Remove the BMW Bezel from the oil cover. And Drill a hole in the oil cover.
• Phase 2A : Locate the wires to the blinkers (two on each side. Left: (1) Blue/Red (2) Brown Right: (1) Blue/Black (2) Brown)) & Locate the Running light wire (single wire, usually blue/grey or black/grey). Cut all the wires & extend them using Red all-weather connections. Then, put them into the receiving end of a BLUE female blade quick disconnect.
• Phase 2B: (OPTIONAL) Extend the wires on the LED harness & match colors with the extensions added to the bike, for clarity purposes. Put the three wires from the harness into individual RED male blade quick disconnects.
• Phase2C: Connect the quick disconnects with the proper bike wires. (Brown to Brown) (Blue to Blue/Grey) (Orange to [Hot wire on either blinker)
• Phase 3: Mount double adhesive LED to Oil Cooler. Mount BMW Bezel to Light.

Exhaustive Overview:
(I'll do my best to get pics up shortly...but hopefully this will give you an idea of what to do).
Phase 1: Remove & Drill out oil covers
• Step 1: Remove the oil cooler covers. There should be two star-bolts on the bottom of the cover, and two plastic tabs on top. Unscrew the screws and lift up. The cover should give a little resistance and pop off. Repeat on other side.
• Step 2: Remove the Bezel. The location of the bezel in the circular divit makes it very difficult to remove. Get a heat gun/hair dryer, turn it on low. This will loosen up the adhesive tape. Take your time and try using a razor blade or a small flat head screw driver. It will eventually pop up. Just remember to take your time. Repeat on other side.
• Step 3:Place the Cooler on a flat stable surface. Use the included drill bit to drill a hole into the side of the cooler. Repeat on other side.
• Step 4: Get some alcohol or solvent (I prefer Goop Off Auto Safe…make sure you get the auto stuff) and clean off the surface of the cooler where the light & bezel will go.

Phase 2: Slicing and dicing the native wires on the bike to permit a connection with the new LED’s.
• Step 5: Locate the left and right blinkers (should be easy).
• Step 6: Cut the tubing/ shrink wrap leading to the blinkers, there should be two wires: Left: (Brown) & (Blue/Red) ….. Right: (Brown) & (Blue/black). Brown is the ground, and the other is the hot.

• Step 7: Cut the Brown wire, notice you now have “two” brown wires. Attach a connector to each end of the brown wire and add about 3 inches of a color of your choice. (After you do this on both sides you should have four wires coming from the motorcycle’s blinkers.)

• Step 8. Take those extended ground wires and clamp them into the female end of a blade quick connector. Use the blue quick connector to this will allows room to receive two 18 gauge wires. Repeat on either side.
• Step 9: Cut the other wire in the blinker (it’ll either be Blue/Red or Blue/Black) Notice you now have “two” colored wires per side. Attach a connector to each end of the brown wire and add about 3 inches of a color of your choice, use the same color on both sides. (After you do this on both sides you should have four wires coming from the motorcycle’s blinkers.)

• Step 11: At this point, you should have two blue quick disconnects on each side of your bike.

• Step 12: Locate the Grey/Blue or Grey/Black (depending on your bike), it may be on the plug at the back of the headlight. It will likely be easier to unplug the unit to work on the wires. This wire connects to the small bulb which is always illuminated in the headlight housing. (this is pictured above)
• Step 13: Cut the Grey/blue stripe. Notice you now have “two” Grey/blue wires. Attach a connector to each end of the brown wire and add about 3 inches of a color of your choice. Take the extended hot (Blue/Grey) wire and clamp them into the female end of a blade quick connector. Use the blue quick connector to this will allows room to receive two 18 gauge wires. (this is pictured above)
• Step 14: At this point, you should have a total of five blue quick disconnects, two per each blinker and one from the running light.

• Step 15: The LED Wiring harness has three wires. The Harness’s BLUE goes to the Running Light’s Blue / Grey. The Harness’s BROWN goes to the Blinker’s BROWN wire. The Harness’s Orange Wire goes to the Blue/Red or Blue/Black (depending on which side).
• Step 16: (Not required) Whatever color you chose to extend the other wires with, do a small extension on each of the three wires. This will ensure there is a common color connection to alleviate confusion either with yourself or for the next owner. [perhaps in the military in me, but I need all my colors to match].

• 17: Take the extended wires and clamp them into the male end of a RED blade quick connector. The RED quick connector are meant for the 18 gauge wires we are using. Blue’s are two big so a single 18 gauge. Do this for both sides.

• 18: At this poin, you should have three RED quick disconnections on either side. For a total of six.
• 19: Using the appropriate Colors, Slide the male balde connects into the female…just the way your father explained the birds and the bees.
• 20: All electrical connections should be complete. So test it out. Turn the key on the bike, they should light up a bright blue & white. Hit either blinker & they should flash orange. Hit the Emergency Flashes and they should flash at the same time.

PHASE 3: Mount the lights to the oil coolers
• Step 21: Separate the Light section from the harness. (as explained at the beginning, there are two parts to the harness)
• Step 22: Decide what angle you want the logo facing.
o NOTE: I have mine in-line with the R115R Script, so the logo is angled forward)
o NOTE: If you want it straight up and down, I recommend mounting the oil cooler and properly aligning it, as the oil coolers sit at an angle, this will change how you mount the lights.
o NOTE: The light mounts have two holes for the BMW bezel to slip in, make sure these are lined up with your appropriate angle
• Step 23: After ensuring the surface of the oil cooler cover is clean, remove the paper covering the adhesive paper and stick it to the oil cover.
• Step 24: After ensuring you’ve cleaned the gunk off the bank of the BMW bezel. Take off the adhesive paper on the light LED (It’s sticky on both sides), Put some all weather silicone on the back of the bezel (available at Home Depot or anywhere) and slap her on.
o NOTE: I had to mount this twice & I discovered the silicone is a great help in ensuring it sticks.
o NOTE: BMW used adhesive /double sided tape. This tape filled a small gap all around the bezel, and without tape, there will be a small gap around the outside of the light. I used some additional double sided tape along the edge to remove the “small gap look.” Not a big deal, but easy enough.
• You're done…open a beer if you haven’t already.

• 20: All electrical connections should be complete. So test it out. Turn the key on the bike, they should light up a bright blue & white. Hit either blinker & they should flash orange. Hit the Emergency Flashes and they should flash at the same time.

• Step 21: Separate the Light section from the harness. (as explained at the beginning, there are two parts to the harness)
• Step 22: Decide what angle you want the logo facing.
o NOTE: I have mine in-line with the R115R Script, so the logo is angled forward)
o NOTE: If you want it straight up and down, I recommend mounting the oil cooler and properly aligning it, as the oil coolers sit at an angle, this will change how you mount the lights.
o NOTE: The light mounts have two holes for the BMW bezel to slip in, make sure these are lined up with your appropriate angle
• Step 23: After ensuring the surface of the oil cooler cover is clean, remove the paper covering the adhesive paper and stick it to the oil cover.
• Step 24: After ensuring you’ve cleaned the gunk off the bank of the BMW bezel. Take off the adhesive paper on the light LED (It’s sticky on both sides), Put some all weather silicone on the back of the bezel (available at Home Depot or anywhere) and slap her on.
o NOTE: I had to mount this twice & I discovered the silicone is a great help in ensuring it sticks.
o NOTE: BMW used adhesive /double sided tape. This tape filled a small gap all around the bezel, and without tape, there will be a small gap around the outside of the light. I used some additional double sided tape along the edge to remove the “small gap look.” Not a big deal, but easy enough.

The lights are an amazing addition to the bike & it should have been standard on the bike. (I'm surprised BMW hasn't done it).
