Scrambling the tires !

Good Evening to all. I have one question; if i would be changing my tires to a scrambler type, what brand and type should i purchase ?

Besides does anybody know some one who can make a headlight grill for a r1150r ?

The new Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 comes it the right sizes for both the Rockster (180/55 ZR17) and Roadster (170/60 ZR 17) rears and the required 120/70 ZR 17 front. I had good luck with the Scorpion Syncs when they were available in the 120/70 ZR 17 & 180/55 ZR 17 sizes (replaced by the Scorpion Trails), I got about 7,500 miles out of a set (twice) with really nice handling and feedback as well as being very good in the rain. They are a 90/10 tire, light off road think graded gravel & dirt.

I may well be tempted by them again for my next set - but they are quite expensive for what they are, and (ime) the wear rate is worse than regular sport-touring tyres.

I agree that the mileage the Syncs went was not as good as the PR2s (original fitment, good in the rain, ok wear) which went a little over 10,000 miles, but made the handling scary at the end due to the center being flat from too many highway miles. Next up was a set of Pirelli Diablo Strada tires which again went 10,000 miles +/- but as with most touring tires not as much feedback as a sport tire, good wear rate, and safe in the rain. In between I bought a set of Rockster Rims and had them powercoated black and the lips polished so I could mount a set of the Syncs, because I was living were there are many graded dirt roads a 90/10 tire seemed like the best choice for all around travel. The Syncs had more feedback than touring tires and a better wear rate than sport tires while still being really good in the rain, I was willing to live with the reduction in mileage for the improvment in handling. I had put a set of Metzler Tourance Next's on, but had less than a 1,000 miles when the bike was retired so I can not give feedback on them.

Just shows how different people have different experiences. Pirelli Diablo Stradas are (were) my favourite tyre of all on the Rockster. Superb feedback and grip in all weathers. The Angel ST just isn't as good.

Actually gentlemen my intention was to put something on as Max BMW has put on the r75/5 as a scrambler. Scorpion is an innovative one but I guess my case is something that will tend not to stick on asphalt but grab a little off road !

The Continental TKC 80 is available in the for rim diameter and tire width, but the speed rating (Q = 99mph)is a lot lower than reccommended (Z or V = 149 mph) for the R1150's. It will give the "look" you seem to want, but with some significant reduction in speed rating and wear.

That's two questions.

As mentioned, Pirelli Scorpion Sync>>Trail is a good tire series. If you're riding the Alaska haul road, then deeper, "blockier" tread pattern might be favorable for mud release. The TKC center will wear & square quickly on paved roads - just check the rear tires on the GS swarm at any BMW fest.

But for off-road, your R1150R will run out of suspension travel before running out of grip. And remember: our OE wheels are soft.

After a year's sniffing for a scrambling tires, my original tires are worn out. During this time I noted down my 1 year travel log (based on what sweatmark noted down);

~ 2000 km's on asphalt
~ 3200 km's in between village quality roads (non-asphalt and non enduro like roads)

now the time has come for a replacement. In the meantime I was closely observing OE tyres on DUCATI scrambler. These are Pirelli MT60RS Corsa. Even my senses direct me for Continental's, are not easy to find in Turkey.

I intend to purchase 120/70ZR17 for front, and 180/55ZR17 for rear (instead of 170/60ZR17). Any opinions ?

In the meantime for my R51, SCORPION A/Ts were good enough.

You'll need a 5.5" rear wheel for the 180/55ZR17 rear tyre. I believe it fits straight on, but someone else will know for sure.
