Battery Physical Size

So I think the battery on my beloved Blue Beakster is about done. The manuel says that this is the required battery: "Bmw- mereg 12 v. 19A/h resistant to loss of charge min 170 cca"

I have found many options with higher cca's but are they all the same physical size? When I went to auto store they just say "motorcycle ATV battery" with different cca's. No real size description. Do all fit? Where do I find physical dimesions before I take "lid" offine to replace.

I have an '03 R1150R. After driving myself crazy with research on the right battery to get, I finally narrowed it down to a Yuasa 51913. It was the old fashioned fill-it-up-with acid type. 20 amp hrs., exactly the right size and configuration, and only $48.95. Turns out that is what BMW puts in under another name.

Along the way, I discovered that battery type, capacity and brand is only second in the amount of dispute as is engine oil and oil filters.

If you want to make things simple, reliable, long-lasting and inexpensive, I suggest you look into the Yuasa 51913.

Wow. Thanks. Yea, I dont want "battery drama." Are you comfortable with its longevity and maintenece schedule-if any? As we know, replacing or accessing is a PIA.

You may also go for the conventional Exide 12Y16A-3A or Motobatt MB51814 or the Exide SLA12-18 and the Odyssey PC680.
The first one is a lot cheaper than the latter three. I've got the Motobatt and I'm a happy user. It's a big 22Amp beast, does 260 CCA.

Based on what I read, I am expecting 3 to 5 years of trouble-free service from the Yuasa. I do occasionally hook up my BMW battery charger/tender (got it with the bike) when I am away and not riding the bike for a couple weeks.

However, I am not at all certain that is even necessary. And there are certainly many much cheaper and totally adequate alternative battery tenders on the market.

In order to facilitate charging, I installed a fly lead directly from the battery terminals to a location out from under the tank so that I could attach the battery charger directly to the battery without having to go through all the nonsense of using the auxiliary power connector. Works great.

The Odyssey PC-680 is the battery that many on this board have found to be their very favorite battery including myself as I've been using one since 2005. Pretty darn hard to beat. I also use a battery tender as I'm convinced that leads to overall better and longer battery health.

It's about $100 but has beat out (for me) Yuasa, Exide and BMW's own OEM battery which I think is also Exide.

To answer your question, you need a specific size for the R, it's not a very common size .
The Odyssey PC680 is one of the most commonly used batteries used .
I reside in a low desert and batteries don't last very long with the incessant heat here .
I've used ' generic ' AGM type batteries with good results and they are less costly .
