New Speedster Windshield
Hi Guys,
I just bought an OEM BMW Speedster screen for my 04 R1150R. It came with the mounting arms attached to the screen, but no other hardware, or installation instructions.
This should be a simple enough task, but If anyone has done this, I sure would like to know where the arms attach to the bike, and if I need any additional hardware.
Thanks, Tom

Re: New Speedster Windshield
As an update on my Speedster Screen installation, I think I found the mounting location, There are two bolts on under side of the handlebar riser, just below the 2 front riser screws. The problem is that these fillister-head screws are way too short. The supplier failed to include them, so I guess I am stuck for now.

see everything on this page besides the Givi, the Parabellum, and the Flyscreen.
You'll see what the brackets should look like.

Re: New Speedster Windshield
I just took off the fly screen and mounted the speedster shield
Went smoothly
I would suggest when installing: loose fit top brackets the under handlebar bolts (they have give)
Start with bottom bolts - tighten home, install screen with 4 screws -EDIT:DO NOT tighten home ( i like to put a dab of Locktight on the bolts when fastening plastic)
EDIT!!! I noticed a crack in my shield from overtightening!!!!
Then tighten home hard under the handlebar bolts
Now for me.... I'll custom fit a Laminar type lip to the top
Good luck

Re: New Speedster Windshield
Todehnal,
I had the opposite problem - my bike was fitted with the flyscreen and I wanted to remove it for Summer. I went to a BMW Motorad dealer and got two shorter bolts from them.
The smaller bolts, ie the bolts you already have, should have a thread length of 25mm. The bolts you require to fit the screen have a thread length of 35mm.
Hope this helps
Fred.

Okay, I went to the Boneyard, and it looks like I have everything that I need except the two big bolts. Ordered them from Chattanooga BMW.
Rags, thanks for the bolt installation sequence. It makes good sense to do it that way. My guess is that you are not totally happy with the speedster screen as it comes. I plan to give it a try and if I decide that I need more wind protection, I may also add a Laminar Lip. I ride with ear plugs, and a full face helmet. I'm just trying to take a bit of the wind load off of my chest.
Fred, I guess you gave the Speedster Screen a try, and were not happy with it. I love the naked appearance, and lack of buffeting that comes with big windscreen installations. My hope is that the Speedster won't screw that up.
Appreciate all of the info guys.............Tom

Hey Tom
I just want to bring this to top of page
I noticed a crack in the shield I just installed.
I think it was from overtightening on the plexi glass
Careful not to over tighten when installing yours

Re: New Speedster Windshield
Hey Rags,
Thanks for the heads-up. My main mounting bolts have not come in yet. I will be sure to take extra care during the installation process. to ensure that I don't run into the same problem.
With those rubber mount on the screen, just snug and a little plus should be enough, and I will monitor those screws to ensure that that are holding fast. No need to over torquing them.

Re: New Speedster Windshield
Received the missing bolts yesterday and installed my new speedster screen. After installing the screen mounting arms, and test fitting the screen itself, I noticed that the pads on the arms were not matched well to the screen, and it took a lot of adjusting (bending) to get the alignment to my satisfaction. I think that could be the reason for screen cracks to show up later. These arms are pretty malleable, and just little carelessness in handling along the way could set you up for cracks.
First ride after the installation proved to me that this is a very worthwhile addition for a naked bike. At highway speeds, it takes all of that wind load off of my chest, and the air around my helmet it clean. I also find it very attractive. What a nice addition!

Re: New Speedster Windshield
I agree. For some reason the length of the standard bolts was wrong. After slightly cross threading one hole I cleared it with a home made tap and fitted my own shorter screws. The screen is mounted centrally but the brackets look assymetric. Puzzling but I try to look at the road instead.
