LOL yes true
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects handlebars to the saddle.

I just added an ABDECKRING on my 2011 R1200R. When I removed the gas cap, I noticed that the recess wasn't painted, but did appear to be galvanized. Since I have heard reports of some bikes rusting in this area, I wondered if the galvanized coating is something new.

I have an 07, and it is certainly not galvanized in that area. It sounds like BMW is aware of the rust problem, and they are trying some things on the new models...

Thanks to Harry C - my '07 is now sporting the ABDECKRING. On a black tank it's not even noticeable. Luckily also - there were no signs of rust.. which is probably due to me always riding with a tankbag.

Thanks much to Harry! I take back several of the things I've said about you.. :)

BTW - I'm certain the ring makes the fastest color R12R even faster since it cuts wind resistance over the filler cap..

I just returned from my 600 mile service and fitted abdeckringen to my 2011 and my wife's F650GS. Neat!

My dealer had no idea! Next I'll be showing him how to fit GS1200 hand guards to the R

Does anyone have a part number for this ABDECKRING?

Does it really help with the rust?

My bike is garaged, so it is not a problem yet, but over time it may be.
Thanks,

The part number is in the very first post of this thread. It keeps the water out, and I believe without water there will be no rust.

I mounted on my bike before winter it's about 10 bucks and it will keep water out. When i was instaling mine i found about quarter cup of water and plenty of rust,
it takes about 20 min to install.

Bought my bike new in April last year.

Took a vacation on it through Northern California in June, rode one long day in a rain storm.

Read about this gasket in July, took the gas cap off and found a mini swiming pool.

Dried out the area, no rust - too new - sprayed LPS 3 liberally in the area, blew it around with compressed air, just to get it into every nook and cranny, then sprayed LPS 3 again and installed the Abdeckring.

I imagine I'll never have water entry issues around the filler.

Cheap and effective solution.
