I am about to swap my spring struts front and rear. I started wit the rear but could not remove the bushing shown with red arrow on the first picture and seen as displayed in the BMW manual with figure 4 on the second picture. Based on the BMW repair manual once the related screw is removed the bushing can be extracted by hand. Not in my case.

Mine is the older 2006-2010 model range. Once the screw is removed the strut while it pivots is still held firmly in place by something, probably the bushing.
On my 07' that bushing doesn't need to come out to remove the shock, just the bolt. Mine doesn't have ESA though.
Have you tried prying out the shock? It can be a tight fit in there, I've used a flat head screwdriver to get in between the shock and the swing arm coming from the bottom, pushing the bottom of the shock to the rear. I've needed to use a rubber mallet to get the shock back into the swing arm too, but have never removed that bushing.
