Bay Area R1200R sighting - black/pinstripes + caliper lights

Post by SF_Hooligan »

I know of a couple R1200Rs in the bay - Snapping Twig and Hetman. A few times lately I've seen a rider in the bay bridge/580 areas on a black with white pinstripes roadster with caliper mount lights and high-viz stuff on his/her helmet. Just wanted to say hey here, because I think it'd freak you out if I high-fived you as I went by.

Ride safe!

Wasn't me, mine's matte gray.

Every so often I go to Berkeley, and today I delivered our tax info the 'the man' at his office in Novato.

Drop me a PM sometime and let's ride.

I'm not sure I can keep up with you and your fancy suspension. But will do.

LOL!

I'm many things, but fast isn't one of them.

After a week long trip with a pal last summer, and the loaded paniers and extra weight, I came to a conclusion.

The bike with all the weight was smooth and not harsh. Unloaded after the trip, the bike went back to the harsh and oversprung feel. No rebound damping either.

So that's why I did the suspension. I get the forgiving feel without having a load (other than my large self) on the bike.

Yesterday's trip to Novato was really nice. Expansion joints, potholes, etc, all no big deal.

Oh, I get it. I'll do suspension on my bike eventually. I keep spending money on other stuff, and I think the next big thing is a set of Clearwaters. That's gonne have to wait as I ended up buying a new Neotec today - dropped my Qwest a few too many times. Gotta be more careful with this lid.

FYI- in a few weeks, Clearwater is coming out with two new, much brighter sets of lights. They are the same size as the Glenda and Krista, but with twice the number of LES's. the smaller one is the Darla. They were being pre-sold at the Progressive motorcycle show that passed through NYC in January.my plan is to add them to the front forks with LumaLight brackets.

Brighter? They're crazy bright already - I occasionally ride with a dude who has them (he's always behind me ) and the visibility factor is great, especially with yellow lenses. Since they have the brightness control, even brighter will be even better - I can just dial 'em down when I don't want to burn eyeballs.

Yeah. That's accurate.

Just saw the new Clearwaters. The Erica puts out 6000 Lumens? Sweet Jesus. That's just ridiculous. The good thing is, with the Darla now putting out more than the Krista (I think... couldn't find Lumens output for the Glenda) I can use the smaller light and still get crazy output.

I have glendas which are 700 lumens per side, and i think they are very bright. I just can't imagine how bright are new ericas at 6000 lumens

Hi SF_Hooligan,

That would be me you've seen. You get off 580 @ High St. also, don't you? I'll be sure to wave (or attempt a high five!) next time.

Hey John! Yep, High Street. Nice-looking bike! :D

Your lights are caliper-mounted, yeah? How do you like that setup?

SF,

Yes, I have the Moto Lights set-up. When I bought the bike in '07, I was reading everything I could find and somewhere I read that creating a lighting triangle aided other motorists with depth perception. It was written that this triangle lighting is used on trains. The caliper mounting location provides the largest triangle and I believe that the rapid wheel movement increases conspicuity with the Moto lights. In addition, I've installed Acerbis LED hand guards. Starting my sixth year and 58,000 miles later, I've avoided the dreaded left turn in front of me so far (knocking on wood while I type).

Ride Safe,

John

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm thinking of getting some Clearwaters soon and have considered mounting them down there. (the smaller ones, of course)

Another SF R12R that I always see is a white or crystal grey one, going up Folsom in the mornings with a Pelican top case and an ADV sticker. Tried talking to him once, but he has ear buds in with music going, so he can't hear me.

I believe I've seen that guy once or twice.

There are two more black/white pinstripe ones (1) (2) up on CL in the East Bay right now, too. In case anyone needs a spare. 8)

Hey there - I saw you on Harrison just a day or two after my last post in this thread and chuckled to myself. Lots of Rs running 'round the city, it seems.

This is an amazing thing actually.

R1200R's are typically rare to find at the dealer, in fact they usually sell before they get there and the allotment is tiny at best.

Just the same, we have several floating around the City and IMO there would be more if they were more available.

I'd heard that they were the second least popular in the lineup, following the 650 thumper, but I find that hard to believe.

It's hard for me to understand why it's not more popular - it's such a great bike. I guess a lot of BMW folks buy into the ADV image thing or the RT image thing.
