Land speed record dream"n
Ok, hear me out, I've been thinking of visiting the bonneville salt flats. Then the dream part of my brain questioned "what class would my trusty 07 roadster fall into". As it turns out it would be classed as Production frame+production engine with push rods in the 1350cc class. The record is held by a Buell, @152and change. I think the R might have a chance if we both loose some weight, higher gears(like from an RT), free flowing intake and exhaust and the right tires. At the very least I'm pretty sure I could make in the 130mph club. Any thoughts?

Don't be so sure about top speed on the salt. I know a couple of people that went out there and were surprised that they couldn't come near the speeds that they could run on the street at lower altitudes.
I never went and it sounds like fun, except for a lot of standing around waiting.
If you go take pictures.

I'd think the experience of simply being there and running (even if you only hit 110) would be worth the effort.
Re: Land speed record dream"n
Wonder what mods the buell had to get to that speed? What restrictions are set when they say "production frame" and "production engine"? Looks like I need a rule book to start.

That sounds interesting, and it seems you have the right ideas regarding mods. Is there a faster final drive? There was a record with a K bike some years back. I think that all they did was put on tires with a larger diameter.Acpantera wrote:Ok, hear me out, I've been thinking of visiting the bonneville salt flats. I have no idea about riding on salt and modifications, fuels, etc. that are allowed. There may or may not be allowable windshields that would give you an edge. On the road 130mph, maybe even 140mph should be doable, but that may not transfer to salt according to what was said above. It sounds like a great memory if you go through with it.

Great idea, should be a great experience. I bet you could be one of the few people who rides their bike cross country to compete.
My 12R goes 128 MPH (GPS actual) with just the Akro exhaust (at low elevation), you should be able to get much faster with those small mods listed. If I remember correctly R's top speed is limited by the gearing, not lack of power.
Good luck!

Hey Lost Rider, was that 128 up against the rev limiter in 6th?

This is a very interesting idea. You should live this dream.
Re: Land speed record dream"n
I'm with Lost, should be a nice experience. I've had my '07 up to 208 km/h (129.25 mph) on the GPS and it was still pulling nicely but closing in fast on the rev limit. With different gearing it ought to be possible to go significantly faster.
Re: Land speed record dream"n
Good stuff....LOL. I don't think they allow the Rolli riding gear any longer. I have to ck the math, but a guess tells me that the R can do 150+ with the right massage. Going to set my sights on 2014 speed week. Need to align all my planets, seems like a task obtainable. From what I can tell the last record was set in 2003 by the Buell bros.

What are the logistics for doing that? Do you just show up, get in line pay a fee?

yeah... DO IT ! DO IT !
130 is easily attainable

And with an RT rear drive with taller gearing, I think 150 is definitely doable, without other mods.
hard-packed salt is very grippy

Is there anything bad about hitting the rev limiter other than that feeling of losing power, assuming control is kept? Does it hurt anything in the drive train/engine?

Re: Land speed record dream"n
My 2012 r12r did a 135mph MAX!!! I was rolling for a while and it just wouldn't go any faster. And by the way there still were some rpms left. And it just wouldn't go any faster. I had no windshield at the time but i had a GIVI top box on the back, maybe that slowed me down a little bit but I'm sure salt will slow you down even more. 2012 has at least one more HP than 2007. I weigh 210 lbs.
Re: Land speed record dream"n
Not according to my dealer, when I asked about that they suggested it was good for the bike to hit the rev limiter once in a while. Not difficult to do in second gear.Dr. Strangelove wrote:fyi

Sounds fun, my 09 has done 130 many times with ease. My only question is Pushrods??? These are OHC motors, I'm confused..
Speed cures all handling problems.
