Possible recall BMW R 1200 series 2005-2008
Heads up R1200 owners, heard rumors of a possible recall of the R 1200 series years 2005-2008.
Cracks developing in the fuel pump housing which may lead to fuel leaks.

Re: Possible recall BMW R 1200 series 2005-2008
I think "recall" is optimistic.. the write-ups I've seen is that NHTSA is doing an investigation on leaks from the fuel pump on certain R1200 models - but they'd only gotten 24 complaints so far. Since I've never heard of this flaw appearing on the R1200R (our unique tank design may be the reason) we might well be excluded from any service action BMW want to make.
The flaw is - the mounting boss for the output fitting on the fuel pump cracks over time, causing leaking around the threads of the output fitting. BeemerboneYard makes a clamp fitting to go over the boss to help reinforce it, and the latest pumps from BMW have a crimped on metal ring around the boss (achieving the same thing.)

Don, You're saying we don't have this problem? Here I've been worrying about how I'm so lazy and not checking this. And its' all been wasted? Guess I'll have to find something else to worry about. Maybe the rear drive can be my next target, though it seems fine at 26k miles.

Re: Possible recall BMW R 1200 series 2005-2008
I can't say we couldn't have this problem - but like the fuel-pressure-controller, it appears how our fuel tank has the fuel pump flange mounted - we're just not seeing any failures. I haven't heard of any R12R having either failure. Mine has 62,000 miles on it, and no leaks and still on the original controller. I've ridden in lots of rain, so if the controller was going to crap out, I think it would have by now. Our output line from the pump is tied down by where it goes to our fuel filter (and we have the only R1200 bike with a fuel filter) so I think there is less stress on the boss in the mounting flange.Bob Ain't Stoppin' wrote:Don, You're saying we don't have this problem? I stopped worrying about the rear drive the first time I changed the oil, and the oil coming out looked just like what I was putting in, clear and dry. It's been that way each time I've changed it. I basically really trust this bike.. so I'm not afraid to take it some distances from home (next year is coast-to-coast-to-coast if things work out..)

Which problem?bmwbob wrote:well i might be the only one but mine failed at 47000 miles .

$300 is way too cheap for a new fuel pump assembly, and BeemerBoneyard doesn't sell the pump-controller or a fix for it that I know of.. they do sell a clamp for the output boss on the fuel pump flange mount.
What broke and what was replaced?

Re: Possible recall BMW R 1200 series 2005-2008
what you were talking about were the fuel line comes out of the
flange. it looks like its a nut but its just cased that way . right on the edge of what looks like nut cracked almost need
a magnifying glass to see . how i caught mine was i went for a ride
when i got home and parked the bike . there was a puddle of gas under the
bike . at first thought it was the quick disconnects . took it to the dealer turned
out it was the flange leaking . beemer boneyard sells a ring that goes over the
nut looking thing after you glue it . its about the same thing bmw did but theres
is just a metal ring but does the same thing . they charged me around 180.00 for
the flange and bout 130.00 to install it . just like they had the abs unit on sale
for awhile for 1000.00 .

Re: Possible recall BMW R 1200 series 2005-2008
Bob,
Don't need to see it, I have seen a lot of photos of what happens. What's interesting is they sold you just the flange. According to everything I've heard to date - the flange was only available as part of the complete fuel pump assembly, at something over $500. If they sell just the flange with the reinforcing ring on it, that's a good deal (and I'd guess that's how they'll fix ones that break from now on.)
On the repair order (you should have a copy) is there a PN for the flange?

That's still an excellent deal. MSRP on the pump assembly is close to $600.

They're talking about the fuel pump, not the ABS pump.

Now I understand. $850 for a new ABS pump is indeed a good price!

$400.00 to the door for my abs pump............ getting anything less than a 2010 model puts you right back where you were to begin with.................
