Fitted GS Hand Guards to my 2012 R1200R

Post by Snapping Twig »

Didn't know I couldn't do it until after it was done.

Took 10 minutes and $5 to install.

Two new 8mm stainless bolts, small stainless washers and some garden hose gaskets did the trick.

Admittedly the clamps to the bars are in the thickening part and aren't totally clamped down like they would be if they were on a constant diameter section, but who cares? They're solid and the look isn't so bad.

I used the provided aluminum end washer plates and positioned two garden hose gaskets between the bar weights and the plastic hand guard connection.

Washer goes on the new bolt and you center everything and tighten it down.

Done deal.

Works, looks good and then I read that I couldn't do this.
Should I take it off?

Glad to have them, they work and now my hands stay warmer.

OK, pics.

Nothing much to add to what I wrote, but I'll cover it again here.

Buy some 8mm stainless bolts, longer than the ones currently in your R. I just eyeballed it, but I think they're 2" or 2.5".

Small stainless washers just larger than the head of the bolts.

Garden hose gaskets/washers. I bought two types, one the traditional flat type, the other more of a large O ring. They're cheap. I used one O ring type and one flat type per side, but the point is to build up the end so you can avoid digging the aluminum washers into the bar end weight and take up enough space to tighten the assembly.

Lightly clamp the hand guard onto the bar where it naturally falls. Keep it on but loose for adjustment.

Put the end washer (large aluminum piece) provided in the hand guard assy. into the correct spot on the hand guard and then between the hand guard and the bar end weight, use two garden hose washers/gaskets.

Keep the washers/gaskets centered as you put the new stainless bolt/washer combo into the aluminum bar end washer.

Tighten and keep the new bolt centered in the aluminum end washer, keep the garden hose washers/gaskets centered - tighten.

Tighten the clamps on the handlebars once you've made sure to give clearance to the brake and clutch assy's.

End result.

Please note the Ceebailey sport windscreen. :)

This is the end result.

The end of the hand guard isn't rock solid, unmovable, welded into position, but it's not going anywhere - that's for sure. It will move if you purposely move it, with some effort, but it's more than enough for my purposes and immovable by wind or minor bumps. Even then, it only moves a few mm's.

The clamps are not flat, but they are not at all loose either and do not look offensive IMO. YMMV.

Hope this helps.

Damn! I wish I'd thought about using Hose spacers! I ended up using R1150 end spacers and a aluminium ring spacer on the inside. The R1150 end caps have a smaller diameter than the 1200GS guards so I had to hold them neatly centred whilst I tightened them up.
Maybe it's time to go back and try yet another iteration :D

Well worth the investment and oddly they don't look out of place on the R bike at all.

Thanks for the photo's. :D
I've thinking about this for some time, but the Dealer said it was not possible.

Are there any difference's between your current model and the 2008 handlebars that you know of?
Pls keep us posted on how they work out,

Cheers Ty.

Ty

2010 and back have a constant and smaller diameter handlebar than the new R1200R. I used 3M body tape to fill in the gap where the brackets attach to the handlebar. No problems in 5k miles.

This is from an old thread but it still seems relevant.

I made a 2 piece mount for the inside end that allowed me to have both mounts look the same and involved just a little shaping and bemding of aluminum (3/4" flat bar) and painted it to match the bike's silver parts. I used some heavy 20 mil electricians tape (pipe wrap) that you can get at Home Depot (I use for a lot of stuff so it is handily to have a roll) and the GS sized bar clamps do work and protect the bars.

Image

I also painted the wind deflector black to match the bike. I will also apply a clear coat that should brighten up the color.

I have 2 different end cap treatments to go with the flat head screws (SS from McMaster Carr) and maybe some feedback can direct me to a selection:

Aluminum Cone washer:

Stainless steel cone washer over a black finish washer:

I sandwhiched the following parts to make the assembly, starting at the bar end weight:
1 - neoprene washer to protect bar end from scuffing and also help provide friction to hold ass'y in place
2 - SS washer that fit perfectly within the GS handguard hole to keep it centered
3 - the GS guard
4 - another neoprene washer to provide friction for finishing washer
5- aluminum cone washer or a black washer to go with the SS cone washer.

Tighten it down and it works well. I added some contact adhesive to add some more friction to the assembly and it all appears to work well. It sure is great to have these guards on the open road. When it is cold it helps but I also found out in 100 plus degree weather it blocks the scorching heat from hitting your hands.

Good luck.
I don't know of a break in period for life, I guess I'll just live it like I stole it.

There is also an option from Isotta srl in Italy.
http://www.isotta-srl.com/EN/ARTICLES/SP8106.aspx

I contacted the staff and they redirected to their dealer in Austria EuroNetBike

here is the full list http://www.euronetbike.net/isotta/motor ... mw/r1200r/

As I see the instruction are in Italian though, doesn't need to be installed to the handle bar, but right above the lever.

Have you heard about Isotta?
