OK, pics.
Nothing much to add to what I wrote, but I'll cover it again here.
Buy some 8mm stainless bolts, longer than the ones currently in your R. I just eyeballed it, but I think they're 2" or 2.5".
Small stainless washers just larger than the head of the bolts.
Garden hose gaskets/washers. I bought two types, one the traditional flat type, the other more of a large O ring. They're cheap. I used one O ring type and one flat type per side, but the point is to build up the end so you can avoid digging the aluminum washers into the bar end weight and take up enough space to tighten the assembly.
Lightly clamp the hand guard onto the bar where it naturally falls. Keep it on but loose for adjustment.
Put the end washer (large aluminum piece) provided in the hand guard assy. into the correct spot on the hand guard and then between the hand guard and the bar end weight, use two garden hose washers/gaskets.
Keep the washers/gaskets centered as you put the new stainless bolt/washer combo into the aluminum bar end washer.
Tighten and keep the new bolt centered in the aluminum end washer, keep the garden hose washers/gaskets centered - tighten.
Tighten the clamps on the handlebars once you've made sure to give clearance to the brake and clutch assy's.

The end of the hand guard isn't rock solid, unmovable, welded into position, but it's not going anywhere - that's for sure. It will move if you purposely move it, with some effort, but it's more than enough for my purposes and immovable by wind or minor bumps. Even then, it only moves a few mm's.
The clamps are not flat, but they are not at all loose either and do not look offensive IMO. YMMV.
