Cloud of smoke when starting

Post by mikecampbell »

Got 4000km on the clock and every once in a while I get a cloud of smoke when starting my 2011 R1200R Classic! Anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Does it happen after the bike's been on the side stand for a couple of days? If thats the case, its not an issue - very comon in older boxers. Usually due to oil in the left cylinder head

But in those 'old' boxers you could also hear the pistons bouncing around in the jugs and the valves rattling in the guides..
I would definitely make a point of bringing it up to the dealer and keeping a record of it. I've left mine with almost 50K on it sitting on the sidestand for extended times and never a puff of smoke. I've also never seen one of the new 1200s blow oil on startup. I know it's basic but are you sure your oil level is correct.

Could be a break in thing, but cover yourself by telling the dealer.

Yes, it is on the side stand when parked. I assumed it is as a result of the oil draining into the barrel - just concerned as the dealer does not get any enquiries or concerned customers mentioning this.

On my 1998 r1200c i find that if i let her 'settle' a bit before putting her on the side stand that helps the next time i fire her up. it shouldnt happen that often on a new bike though.
