My bike came with the BMW side cases. I think they'll be great for long trips, but they seem a bit much for around town. So I want to put a luggage rack on the bike that I can mount my small Givi topcase to.
Looking at the parts fiche, I found a "Baggage Porter Kit," part number 71607699528. It looks like a luggage rack that includes mounting brackets that replace the side case mounting brackets and attach to the same hard points on the bike.
What's not clear is if those brackets can also be used to mount the side cases. In other words, can you have the side cases and the luggage rack on the bike at the same time?

I can't say if it's the same part number or not, but probably, because I only remember seeing one rear rack for the R12R. I've got one on my machine and yes, it takes the side cases.
My dealer had to retro-fit the rack, as the bike didn't have the bags coming from the factory. So rather than the standard rig I ordered the rack for a little more flexibility.

Look over here on this website:

It states that the original sidecases can stil be used and there's also a pdf manual from sw motech. You could always contact sw motech to be sure. I don't work for any of the companies mentioned though so don't blame me when the rack doesn't work with the original sidecases

Re: Luggage Rack?
Howdy, New guy from Texas. I've had my new R1200R for about a month. I bought it for my retirement gift to myself replacing my 2009 Suzuki GSXR 1000. This is my second BMW, my first was a 79 R100RS back in the early 80's.
BMW offers two different side rail mounts for the panniers. The short rail doesn't have a rear rack option either OEM or aftermarket. There are a few aftermarket rear racks that work without the OEM short pannier mounts but with the short rail there's no option. The long rails are made for using the OEM panniers and incorporate the mount for the rear rack. If you want to run the OEM bags and a rack you need to use the long side rail pannier mount. I wish I had known that when I ordered my R1200R and I would have specified the long mount, because now I have to buy it and just put the brand new short ones in a box on the shelf.
2012 R1200R Apple Red, sport screen, heated grips, trip computer, ABS, ESA, ASC, center stand, panniers, Tourtech oil cooler guard, Airflow headlight guard, SW Motech/Bags Connection City tankbag, RKA bagliners, Leo Vince LV1 slip-on.
