Seat troubles... Corbin too wide?

Hi everyone,

I've got a corbin seat on my '98 r1100r that was with the bike when I bought it. I'm around 5'10 and I've had some interesting issues with this seat... It appears to have been designed for someone much taller than me, as I cannot easily plant my feet flat on the ground. If I'm sitting all the way back in the seat, the seat's width stops my legs from touching the ground. The further I slide forward, the lower my legs can go, because the seat is narrower towards the front. Basically I have to slide forward about 5 inches on the seat whenever I stop, just so I can get my feet close to flat on the ground. If I want them all the way down I have to slide up snug against the gas tank. The bike is by no means too big for me, and the seat height is more than fine for my inseam. I've even sat on many newer bmw's with higher seats and was more comfortable.

I've been trying to find people with similar issues but I'm having a hard time... The seat is on the lowest possible setting so there's not much more I can do besides getting a new seat of some kind. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced similar issues? If anyone knows the dimensions of the stock seat I'd be willing to try to pick one up if it were more narrow than the corbin... Thanks for any help, as this issue is quite frustrating.

Hi.

The one and only Corbin seat that I bought, for a Suzi Intruder 750, was much wider than the standard one it replaced.
It was, however, very comfy, my feet still reached the ground, and I loved it, but...as you so rightly say, the extra width can reduce your ability to touch the ground with your feet.

I am about the same height as you, maybe a fraction shorter, and I use the second position on the standard seat on my 1998 R850R, which is not physically smaller than the 1100.

Wherabouts are you anyway? Are there other R1100Rs near you that you could borrow a standard seat for testing?

I'm fairly sure that a standard seat would fix your problem.

I've been trying to find one near me to try, but with no luck... I went to my nearest dealer yesterday to ask about the seats; The guy said that every corbin he's seen has been wider than the stock R series seat. I've got the seat on the lowest setting, but I think a stock seat might be my only real solution at this point. Guess I'll start the hunt, Thanks for the help!

Where are you located? Perhaps there is a member nearby who has a seat you can try.

Does the addition of the Corbin seat mean you loose the 3 position height adjustment on the bike?

According to http://www.corbin.com/bmw/96r1100rt.shtml, it would appear that you still have the three position option.

I'm in Los Angeles. The seat still has the three adjustments, and I've got it on the lowest setting. Short of lowering the suspension I think I'm stuck with being comfortable when i ride, but slightly uncomfortable when stopped. I think the problem became evident when I moved out here from the east coast, where I did mostly country riding.

According to the Corbin web site, their seat is 15 inches wide.

Standard seat, on mine, is 13 and a wee bit inches wide, at the very back of the seat, but it narrows down to just over 11 inches, very quickly.
