Dark Ferro Touch-Up Paint!

Post by monomoit »

Well, GREAT news for those of us with bikes featuring Dark Ferro (BMW Color Code 488), who, up until now, have been unable to obtain touch-up paint!! While BMW's own recently introduced touch-up pens COMPLETELY overlook this much-used color, I found a solution... After doing some research, and then talking with the nice folks over at http://www.paintscratch.com/, they agreed to produce the Dark Ferro paint we need, and list it for sale on their website...

To see the options available, go to: http://www.paintscratch.com/search.html, for color code enter "488", and for make, select "BMW- Motorcycles". I just finished ordering a paint pen, along with a clear-coat pen (I already have one of their primer pens). I have ordered from PaintScratch before; their quality is excellent and their service outstanding.

Once I have received the touch-up pen, I will post an update here, along with photos!

For the life of me, I can't imagine why BMW doesn't offer this color in their own touch-up pens. So many bikes feature Dark Ferro...

Dark Ferro is a rare and much sought after color. BMW put a lot of engineering and money into a very rare and select group of R's. BMW, in their wisdom, marketing and business savvy built a machine that was a cut above the conventional R. This is not common knowledge and I dare say is actually or until now was a tightly kept secret.
The decision was made to separate this superior R from the rest of the machines. After much discussion they finally decided the best way to do this was to come up with a new and excitingly different color. And yes you guessed it--------Dark Ferro was born.

Paint pen(s) from PaintScratch.com arrived in today's mail, and I am THRILLED to say that after performing a quick test, the Dark Ferro (Metallic) is about as close to a PERFECT match as possible!!! Tonight, if I have the time, I will shoot a few pictures of my minor touch-up efforts and post them here. Suffice it to say, however, I am about as happy as can be right now!!

Success!! The touch-up pen worked absolutely great! Now, as promised, some photos:

Image

This is the Dark Ferro (488) Pen, with my "custom fine-tip applicator" pack... ;)

Image

Sharpening a cardboard match stick to a point gives you a WONDERFUL fine-tip applicator...

Image

Seen in the upper edge of the photo is a small nick to the Dark Ferro Tank Decal above the right oil cooler...

Image

And a close-up of the same

Image

This is the nick after touch-up using a sharpened match stick, with a small dab of paint; the "divot", of course, is still visible, but the color match is SPOT ON!

Image

Another blemish I had was at the bottom edge of the instrument cluster, from the old key fob getting "caught"

Image

And here, a close-up of the scratches...

Finally, the touched-up area, using the same match stick!

I could not be happier with the color match, nor with the service received, from PaintScratch.com. For all of you out there in need of Dark Ferro touch-up paint for your bike, this is a GREAT option!
