R1200R 2011 luggage/pannier rack

Post by brahman »

Hi,

First post so an introduction is neccessary.

I have been reading the forums without posting for a few months now and I can confirm that I have recently been hit by the test ride syndrome. :-) I Purchased my bike a month ago. So far so good, am absolutely loving it! (Dark Grey)

I last night took a good look at the luggage rack that I purchased and noticed something that I had not before.

There is a hole on each side of the tail where previously the grab handles were attached. Also the silver plastic "Spoiler" is not round like on the previous models and looks very untidy, also where the grab handles used to be attached. (Not what I expect from BMW.)

This has led me to believe that the dealership installed the older model of the luggage rack, which I have been told differ slightly.

I will try and get some pictures when I get home on Sunday as my explanation might not be the clearest.

If anybody can show me pictures of the 2011 rack and where it connects to the body of the bike I would really appreciate it.

Kind Regards,

Tom

Just had a quick look at mine and there are no holes in the tail section where the rack is fitted.

Hi,

Sorry for not replying any sooner, I have been on a road trip to Wales.

Roads were amazing as was the weather, this all contributed to highlight how great the r1200r is.

I am amazed!! :-)

With regards to the photos here are some pictures with the holes in the side of the tail.

xbpod, could you post some pictures of your tail with the rack fitted?

Thanks for all your input.

I have found what I believe to be the part over at http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/ ... d=03252011.

The part diagram looks identical to the part I have installed, which is weird since I don't believe these holes should be there.

Has anyone else got the luggage/pannier rack fitted to a r1200r from 2011? Photos welcome...

I am about to go in for my first service and would like to raise this with the dealership if necessary.

Kind Regards,

Tom

Pete,

You can't post pictures, but you can post links to pictures, like brahman did, or you can post image links - if you do the latter, the board will retrieve the picture and display it in your post. See the first post in this thread:

It appears that the new 2011 grab handles must be removed to fit the luggage rack. And that the holes left behind could be covered up by substituting the 2010 and earlier trim cover. But I can't tell for sure, and a dealer would probably know.

I wonder why they'd have an aftermarket muffler in the photos?

Tom

Does your left hand pannier have a heat shield as it is a requirement on the 2011 luggage? If not it is a free modification carried out by your dealer. Mine is on order and should be in on Monday.

All,

I think we have got to the bottom of this, but I will confirm when I have seen my dealer on Saturday.

xbpod has kindly sent me shots of his luggage rack, these show that the rear spoiler is different so it must get fitted as an extra part during rack installation.

This fits in with the diagram at maxbmwmotorcycles.com (part #46637723861 REAR TRIM PANEL, CENTER, GRAIN PATTERN )

Don C looks like you were right... Thanks.

below are the pictures Pete sent me, uploaded with his permission.

Thanks to all that helped.

Tom

Ps: Pete, I do not have the side cases yet, I bought the rack with the plan to get these when needed.

Hi all,

Just an update to the thread and for whoever else might experience this issue.

I just picked my bike back up after it's first service. The part that they had forgoten to put on my bike was the rear trim panel AKA the silver spoiler (part # 46637723861).

BMW customer service is the best!!!

Thanks for all your help.

Hi, new to the site. I just purchased an 08 r1200r with no luggage or racks. I'm curious if it's possible to retrofit the 2011+ passenger grab handles onto a 08? I would like to give my wife something other than me to hold onto without having that huge rack on there.

Thanks,
Drew

Hi, Drew. A quick check of the Max BMW parts fiche shows "NA" under price for the 2011+ tail trim, leading me to think a retrofit is not possible. The NAs appear for other parts that were changed with the facelift, starting with the 2011 model. The tail handle is part 46547712939. A call to Motorrad parts will confirm if I'm right.

Thanks for looking into that. I guess I'll give them a call and see what they say.
