What do you think of this 2002 R1150RA

Post by Rikosintie »

I am thinking about buying this 2002 R1150RA http://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2002 ... A-98448429

I have never owned a BMW before and have been reading up here. It seems a lot of people recommend going with a 2004 over the '02. I plan to use it for commuting back and forth to work so miles will accumulate.

Thanks!

Disclaimer: I have neither ridden nor inspected this motorcycle. It is up a prospective buyer to ascertain the condition of the particular motorcycle as well as it's history.

That said, this is exactly my bike. Same year, same color, same options, same cases, same windscreen. A bit lower miles than when I bought mine (21K) and $250 cheaper. As I understand it all you get with an '04 is dual spark which, IMHO adds complexity without adding anything tangible in performance.

Naturally you're worried about expensive repairs. Well you could ride a brand new R1200R off the lot today and experience spline failure at 6,000 miles. Or pick up this bike and ride it for 100K with no problems. Machines are machines. If you like this bike, if it checks out, if you can afford it, go for it. If you have a bad feeling about it, don't. Does it have maintenance records? Did it get the 600 mile inspection? Has the brake fluid been flushed? Oil been changed regularly? Let us know what you decide and why.

There are also those on this site who believe that blue is the fastest color. They may be right but, more importantly, yellow handles the best.

Thanks for the reply! I saw that you had the same bike and was hoping to hear from you.

You hit my concerns on the the head. I think that forums focus us on problems because you only post if you had a failure! You don't log in everyday and say "mine is still running great".

I bought a 2010 Ducati Hyper on impulse. Then I started reading the forums and thought I had made a mistake. But 7000 miles later it has been flawless.

I will keep you posted on my progress.

And, handling trumps speed in my opinion!
