r1150r Hall Sensor Replacement Input

My 2004 r1150r may, or may not, have a Hall sensor issue. I've brought it into my trusty repair guy (not a BMW dealer, but pretty much only works on BMWs), and he's stumped. I have the typical symptoms... sometimes it just starts right up, the rpms sometimes go all wonky, and other times it runs just fine. Then all of a sudden it doesn't start, doesn't seem to get spark. If I keep cranking, the battery will wear down, and I might even smell gas... or sometimes I get just enough spark to get it to turn over in the knick of time (before the battery just loses cranking power). Sometimes you can even jiggle wires from the throttle, and that seems to help. My guy's had it hooked up to a computer diagnosis, but he says he can't seem to isolate the problem.

Called BMW Service and both times I did call, the service guy told me that it sounded like the Hall sensor, apparently a common problem. He suggested that it could be dirty, or that the Hall sensor is just faulty. Or, in a worse case, scenario the wiring harness does have a short. From what I've read in this forum, it does sound highly likely... the question is... as anyone done this repair themselves. To be honest, I've not worked on my bike a whole lot....not a lot of time, but I have owned bikes in my younger days that I did do the work. I don't own a Clymer manual, but should I get one to do this repair if I want to save myself the agony of doling out a grand to BMW? Has anyone followed the procedure that has been recommended here to repair and replace the Hall sensor? I'm just trying gauge how "simple" this repair is in the realm of simple. I've read the repair/replace procedure and I'm confident I could do it, but simple? Seems like a lot of room for error.

Not riding is killing me! Thoughts on the DIY repair?

If it is intermittent, I would suspect a harness problem rather than the Hall sensor. Have you examined the harness at the cable ties? The ties must be sufficiently loose at the locations along the harness where there is movement when the handlebars are turned.

Thanks Arbrea.... yeah, my BMW guy said the same thing...that sometimes the ties are tied too tight at the factory... I haven't checked it, but he has... no avail.
