Throttle "Advance"\Choke lever wont stick

Post by rprothero »

Anyone have their Throttle "Advance"\choke lever not stick in place in up position to start the bike when cold? I have to hold mine for about 30 sec to a minute to get the idle somewhat smooth..Not a huge deal but would like to know if there is something i can do to tighten the hold so the lever stays in place..anyone run into this one?

There are 3 positions for the "High Idle" switch. The top one you must manually hold it while you start the bike. Once started, you release it and it is held in the 2nd position until the bike is warm. Then once the idle is about 1500-1700 you manually push it down into the bottom position so the idle is at normal 1100. If yours doesn't do that, the little metal ball inside the switch may be rusted or gunked up and is not holding it where it should.

OK, that sounds like how mine is behaving. Thanks!

I recently swapped out my handlebars and when putting it all back together snapped off the friction plate on that item. There is a short metal piece that provides friction. It might have fallen out. I did manage to find a used one in good condition on eBay for $2.99. Haven't put it on yet since don't much need it in the summer.

AS said above - they're not supposed to stick in the "top" position.

Mine does - but only because it's gunked up something chronic.

I'd go so far as to say that if you NEED to hold it open at the top position for the bike to run, then there's something wrong with the setup, idle too low, TB's out of balance or something.

If I hold it in place for 30 sec it seems to catch idling and idle at thr 1500 mark..However one more concern is its middle of summer and the bike basically wont start unless thats held at the top..Is that normal? Or do I need to give the fuel pump more time to push more fuel into the chamber before pressing the starter..Im used to old carburator systems so small education on fuel injection may be in order..Or the bike was tuned to lean when last service was done (throttle sync\valve adjust)

I have to hold mine to top position too.
After reading melted oil site glass post, I don't mind doing it. The header gets very hot and will melt the site glass if left on high idle too long.
