Porous 2011 seat (better look inside for an explanation)

Post by CupOHemlock »

The seat on my new 2011 R12 is accumulating water, which is slowly being squeezed back through the seams right where my thighs make contact with the outside edge of the seat. If one presses on the aforementioned seams, water will be extruded to the outside of the seat.

Removing the seat, flipping it over, and poking a finger in one of the two holes showing the foam cusion yields a damp finger.

The only thing I can relaibly conclude is that water is seeping into the seat through the stitched seams and then coming back out when my legs are pressing on them from normal riding.

Now, anyone else seen this? I am asking for a warranty replacement, but if this is common I will save BMW and my dealer the trouble and start working on ways to prevent/limit the problem.

I had a similar experience couple years back but mine was with an aftermarket Sargent seat. Never had issues with stock seat (03 & 04) but those had no exposed seams. The Sargent ultimately dried out but I had to keep bike covered during rain to do so. There are seam sealing products for camping gear but I would hate to think that would be necessary for a new bike.

good luck

Is this after riding in the rain or otherwise getting the seat wet or is it some sort of condensation?

This happened after an old-fashioned rain shower, bike uncovered.

If BMW doesn't think you have a problem, some seam sealer from a camping supply store might fix it. Just make sure you wipe up the excess while it is wet or it might leave a mark.

BMW agreed that I did have a fixable problem. Ill post another note if the replacement does not perform as expected.

Thanks all for the replies.
