R1150R Battery non OEM Valid?

Post by eduardobelmonte »

I read the Odyssey PC680 Sealed Powersport Battery 220CCA 51913 is an excellent battery for the R1150R 2004.

I would like to verify the terminals it has are the ones really required.
Please follow the link to see how they look like and rest of info.
Thanks :-k

Hi, Eduardo,
That looks like it would work. Mine has flat terminals flush with the top of the battery--4mm hex iirc, but from the picture it looks like that one has knurled bolts on top that are either completely removable or serve as a bolt for your connections. There is room under the tank should those knobs be needed.

I bought the metal jacket version of that battery, but would not do so again. the metal jacket makes for a VERY tight fit in the battery tray. I would buy Odyssey again without hesitation, but not metal jacket.

Hope this helps

Thanks John,

What is the external difference between the one with metal jacket and the other? A different color perhaps?
Is there a difference in the code that identifies it too?

I wonder what's the code/part number of your actual battery?
I know.... hard to say ( I mean to read ) under the tank....!
But just in case so I can better take your advice.

Thanks again, :D

$109.00 is a good price for PC680.

That is what I have on all my bikes. Good battery, but I would get the "L" shape terminals and a good a charger from the http://www.odyssey.com:-k

Good luck.

I think the L shaped terminals are $10 more, but some forum members said their battery arrived w them. Without paying for them. I do not have them.
The designation was MJ or M At the end of the regular part number, and it looks just like the one in the picture. I think I read somewhere that the metal jacket was military spec. I don't remember if I paid more for it. Got mine 3 years ago and it is going strong so far.

I found the PC680, just that, is the part number for the one with NO metal jacket and with NO external terminals. It just has female receptacles flat in it where you can use a bolt, I believe 6mm diam.

Metal jacket battery sides are orange.
Black are the non metal jacketed.

I found the best price in the following link
http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/odyssey ... ttery.html
It was for 118$ plus shipping, but also when I tried to leave the website they offered a 5% discount..., that brought the whole deal to 118.24$ all included.
And they do accept PayPal...!

Only thing I'd love to compare would be the specs of this PC680 against the gel battery sold at BMW dealers...,
just to see which stores more electricity and which one has more cranking power....
The link I placed above has this info for the PC680, does any body have that same info for BMW's dealer's gel battery?

Thank you all for your help. :D

After quite a bit of denial, Pep Boys confirmed my 7 year old OEM battery had breathed its last. So I ordered a PC680 through Amazon. It included free shipping so the price was similar to the one mentioned above, and I needed some other stuff anyway so that worked out. The battery showed up today, with the L brackets included.

Which means the order of L brackets I had gotten elsewhere are no longer needed. Anyone interested in buying them off me? :D

Anyway, know that if you get the battery from Amazon, the L brackets are included.

We certainly are analyzing this awfully deeply. :?

Here's the bottom line: The Odyssey PC680 is a GREAT battery at a MUCH better price than an OEM BMW battery. I installed one after the OEM battery left me stranded 100 miles from home. Yes, it requires some fiddling to adapt the terminals (note: the L-shaped adapters are supposed to be in the box). And it's dimensionally a little smaller than the OEM battery. But anyone who is skilled enough to remove an R1150R fuel tank should have the skills necessary to make these minor adaptations. And it only has to be done once.

Bottom line: Just buy it already!
