I have a problem with my '94 r 1100 r. Recently the starter was turning with increasing difficulty, and now finally it won't start the bike at all. It makes a laud noise, as usual when it is triggered and the bike is started, but then nothing happens, it doesn't turn over. Battery is fully charged, the engine turns freely (can turn it with the rear wheel) . I can see the battery is being drained/used when i push the starter button.
I checked the motrinics error codes, nothing (the usual 1133 for hall sensor since the engine didn't start). I know there is no error code for the starter motor, but i wanted to check it to see if maybe something else is wrong.
So before i remove the starter motor to check it i thought i would ask the professionals here for opinions, maybe you know the symptoms and can help me, maybe it is something else, who knows... I do have the crash bars around the cylinders, so it is cumbersome since i have to first remove them in order to get the starter out, so i want to make sure that the starter is the problem. I read here on the forum that the early starter had the magnets problems, falling off etc and causing the failure, I guess my problem sounds like this. Would it still make the noise as being triggered but then not turn over ?
Another question, what is the voltage the starter works on, it is not the 12 volts, is it ? How can i test it once removed from the bike (meaning can i actually plug it in to some power source and check if it turns etc ). I have a repair manual and can figure out what voltage should be between various connections there, but it is in german and hence i am not sure how exactly to proceed. Any help and opinions are greatly appreciated, thanks !
cheers
Luk
PS
ok half an hour later and the starter lies in front of me on the table
PS 2
yeah, it is the starter, one of the magnets was loose, broke into pieces and jammed the device. the inside looks like something exploded in there. need a new starter...
thanks to philbytx for his post explaining the faulty early starters
