Battery or electrical?

Post by dutchie »

I have the bike on a BMW tender. Dealer did the 600 mile service two weeks ago, I have 1000 trouble free miles on it. The bike sat for two weeks, I know, I was busy. Today I was going out for a ride and the gauges were not responsive like normal. I had to play with the key to get them to light at all. When they were lit I just got a heavy click by the starter. The bike is an 09 it was delivered in December always on a tender. Anyone had an experience like this. Thanks

Yes, it is a common problem. Mine died shortly after my 600 mile service. My dealer (since I live a couple of miles from Brewster, maybe our dealer) replaced it no problem. I didn't want to risk it again so I put in an Odyssey PC535. That battery is up to the job. I don't bother with the charger unless it's winter.

I did a post on how to do the install. Have a look at viewtopic.php?f=20&t=18938 If you decide to do it and you need a hand, let me know.

You might try reading one or two of the numerous threads on batteries and their failure mode. If your cables are clean and tight going to the battery - chances are still good that the battery is dead. The Exide/BMW battery failure appears to be an internal failure of one of the conductors - giving a high resistance under high-current (starter) conditions. Sort of like a dirty or loose battery terminal would.

Yes. The factory battery is covered under warranty for two years from your in-service date. I'd request a new one from your dealership.

Battery died after one year, but under warranty at no charge. It was replaced with the same brand as that was all the dealership had (or possibly is allowed to sell).

My new 09 I just purchased in April with 1800 miles on it would not start last night! I was on my last stop after a 200 mile trip to Wisconsin. I had lights, indicators flipped the kill switch, nothing. I turned the key off and on it started with a breif check engine light. I am going to call my local dealer and see what they say.
