Aftermarket Exhaust

How many of you are still using the stock exhaust on your bikes?
How many have replaced just the exhaust cans?
How many have replaced the whole system discarding the catalytic converter?
If you have replaced all or part of the exhaust with what brand did you replace it?

I replaced the muffler with a Z Technik (because I got a good price on it) and run with the db killer out.
AND - I didn't notice any increase in power or difference in the handling of the bike with the four pound weight savings. The sound level is just a little louder but the tone is lower.
Overall I'm satisfied - my money, my bike.

I have a Remus full exhaust. I fell it gives the bike a little more mid throttle response, saves a bunch of weight and it sounds super. Over all I am very happy with it.

I have the Laser carbon 'HotCam' slip on and I run it with the DB killer out too. Cat converter is still attached to the bike. The pipe is a little bit louder and deeper and maybe a tiny bit more poke in the top end.

When you change the exhaust is there any tuning, remapping?? I'm coming from the Harley world back to a fun motorcycle. =D>

Nope. None really needed. It isn't like the stock exhaust is restrictive - it's mostly heavy and quiet.. plus the O2 sensors will make any minor adjustments to the mixture that might be needed.

There are a few people here who are running a goober (tech-term), that lies to the ECU using the intake temperature sensor input, which is intended to slightly richen the mixture during acceleration when the ECU goes out of closed loop (ignoring the O2 sensors.)

Haven't heard a lot on the results of the goober device. Anyone? Harry?

I have an Akrapovic exhaust on my 12R. Love it. Everything else is stock. See my write up here.

Running the titanium Akrapovic can with stock header pipes. Great sound, a lot lighter and it doesn't stick out from the bike like the round stock can. Noticeable increase in power at higher RPM's, off-idle and mid-range power about the same as stock.

Actually Don, I'm not sure it's a goober. it may be a gizmo or a whichly.

Actually it is a gee gaw. A goober is any sort of device that any one person feels they don't need or want on his or her bike.
That could be a subject for another discussion. "The worthless stuff you have on your bike that I don't want or need on mine"
We could all chime in.

The stock exhaust is quality and quite. IMO the aftermarket ones look cheap with riveted ends on the can and unnecessarily raises the volume. My neighbors don't need to know when I'm going fast.

Interesting conversation...

Next week I am getting my Hyperpro custom set of shocks installed
and I was wondering if the next heavy investment on my R would be an after-market exhaust.

As TIV just wrote I am not also into noises... if my ride could sound like a small electrical engine I'll be happy as long as I don't loose any fine perception of the traffic....which is by the way what it almost feel and sound like when all is well adjusted on my head Custom earplugs, C3 helmet, balaclava...

To Increase or unleash power a little more
is what I would be more interested than make charming noises.


Is there any equivalent of my Hyperpro shocks in terms of Exhaust ?


Priority's being : 1) Well made 2) Increase power 3) Nice but discreet sounds...preferably

I've got the Remus Carbon FIber slip on. Lighter than stock, a little more growl and, I think, alot better lookin'. More or better performance ? You'd have to put it on Dyno to tell for sure, but if you did pick up a little, I'd doubt you'd know it, and if you balanced the dollars spent vs performance gained, well, I doubt you'd spend the bucks. Got mine in like new shape for 1/2 the price of new, so I took the plunge. And the proper term for that whatcamaycallit is a dohicky.

Both thingamajig and dohicky are perfectly acceptable terms. Around these parts anyway.

I have the stock pipe. Like the look and sound. Quality and quiet, but then I 've always liked large single, quiet, mufflers ever since I first clasped eyes on the Honda 750/4 F1 in my teens. Anyone remember those?

Also love the sound of throaty aftermarket pipes (although not great for pillions or neighbours)

Hmm, carbon one looks nice 8)
Seems a bit higher than stock, will the BMW cases still fit O.K.

It is a close fit but Leo did it right. I have less than .5 inch clearance without any problems.
