Re: Wont start,tried everything
Do you hear the fuel pump whine when you switch on -- before you hit the starter? Is the neutral indicator light on? Sidestand up? Does pulling in the clutch make a difference?

Re: Wont start,tried everything
all lights illuminate, fuel pump whines and puts out pressure, when I changed the pump I also used proper clamps & hose.I even put a capful of fuel into the airbox and only then it would start for 2-3 sec.It is my first BMW,been workin on bikes for 30 yrs but this one has me beat.Maybe something simple I have overlooked.......It worked fine one night, parked it &next morning it refused to start,my fuel mileage was 35mpg prior but I thought that was normal ,only owned it for 6 mths and it has15k on the clock.(also inspected harness & cut the nylon straps off ,seemed in good nick)

Re: Wont start,tried everything
Double check the throttle cables on the throttle bodies...make sure they are seated properly in their channels.
Are you absolutely positive you have good spark???

Re: Wont start,tried everything
Today I spent some more time on it,cleaned connectors and further inspection on wireing, nothing obvious ,strong battery and tumbled. It did fire but only sustained for 3-4seconds without responding to throttle inputs.
What I did notice though was the pump whined, stopped for 2 seconds then whined again with a faint clicking from theTPS while doing so ,I let it go through this "self check" before trying again ,with once again sustaining for 3-4 sec. This sequence was never observed before(ie multiple whines from fuel pump I guess to pressure up system)All dash lights observed ,tried with stand up &down, even cleaning & inspecting side stand switch mechanism.Clutch in & out, fast idle on & off.
Once again this bike started and worked fine daily until one morning it just would not start,no one tampered with it for the 8 hrs it was parked for,on the plus side I am beginning to get to know oilheads intimately from this experience but first I must overcome.
Respect to all!

Re: Wont start,tried everything
MCoop had an aggravating problem last year with very similar symptoms. Turned out to be Hall Sensor. But not a bad one, simply a poorly installed one with a damaged part on the shaft where it connected to the alternator system. It caused the rotation to be eccentric rather than circular, thus causing timing problems. Two shops and one additional expert failed to detect it. Finally solved by Anton (C'vlle independent wrench).
The Older I Get, The Less I Know.
Re: Wont start,tried everything
Mike could be on to something. Check the topic by Phil123 in R1150R section, similar symptoms (at least as far as described) with Hall sensors as culprit. There's more info here and on ADV board concerning Hall sensor repair and preventive maintenance via high temp wiring... Which is something I should do soon.

Re: Wont start,tried everything
I did come across someone on the forum whose TPS failed without warning and am lookinking for sympthoms to confirm the status of mine.I have had a look at the hall sensor wireing and it seems fine, other sympthoms I have read on the forum for the hall sensors are not evident so now focus is on TPS.I'ts been 4 weeks now ,so am fustrated as u all could imagine but I have been careful so far as not to do further damage.
lookin fwd
thanx

Re: Wont start,tried everything
Hubby had a partially blown fuse on his R/RS a number of years back (I've been trying to get him to join in this thread - he's my electrical guru). The symptoms were as mysterious as you're experiencing.
Pull and examine all the fuses or swap them out with known good ones and see what happens?

Re: Wont start,tried everything
Here are the exact symptoms: I could hear the fuel pump whine when the bike turned on. Checking continuity on all the fuses, everything looked good. However, when cranking the load of the starter caused the voltage to drop, and then the drop across the fuse was enough that the fuel pump would not run. Bike would sometimes fire for a moment, but because the fuel pump wasn't running it would not keep running. This was a bike that had mysteriously quit starting, and was then sold as "Doesn't run, unknown problem." So replace fuse 6, even i fit looks OK, and see if it's the same problem.Lion_Lady wrote:Hubby had a partially blown fuse on his R/RS a number of years back (I've been trying to get him to join in this thread - he's my electrical guru). Re: Wont start, tried everything
Mysterious it is,checked, swapped fuses, verified voltage as recommended at TPS,it all seems good, now thinking of fuel distributor.
Any more inputs much appriciated, havent heard of problems with distributor,it seems simple but not sure of all it's duties, does it sense pressure therefore cutting out fuel pump?(mybe prematurely in my case)
Thanx again.

Re: Wont start,tried everything
...just to keep throwing ideas at you...
This reminds me of a problem that Sunbeemer had a while back.
Here are the two threads relating to his problem.

Re: Wont start,tried everything
Although the TPS has never been reported as a problem in our bikes, I did experience a failure in a Ford van I owned. Nevertheless the TPS, with the key on should read somewhre between 355 mv and 410 mv between the last wire on the plug (the one closest to the TB) and ground. An open circuit will not be undestood by the Motronic and hence the engine would not start.
Of course, you performed some checks and the bike is now at the dealer, but did you try to start the engine with the "choke" at it's highest position ?
Keep us posted.....and best of luck.
