Progressive Insurance ! ... my "good morning" surprise...

Post by thepeacebullgrunt »

Hi !
from Los Angeles, California

This morning I had the big surprise to acknowledge that my R1200R Insurance Policy increased over $1000 when I had no tickets & no accidents since years.

Before->$446 & Now-> $1638 for 12 months

Immediately called Progressive and all they had to say was "It is normal ! we didn't charge enough motorcycles for too many years...this is why we had to recalculate your policy..and by the way Motorcycles are way more expensive than cars this is why we ask more or the same amount than cars"

So ! I guess I am now on the market for a new Insurance Policy #-o ... :-k ...

Any help ?

Any recommendations ?

Thanks !

Crap.

I've got Progressive through USAA with two more months on my current policy. Thank you for the heads-up- I'll keep an eye out for that renewal letter to make sure there's no big jump. A rise in rates like that would place insurance for the bike at the same level as insurance on one of my cars that is probably worth 2x to 3x more.

No problem dumfounded !
well it all depends of your Zip codes I guess also...

I can try to skim my policy and decrease up to $750 per year... but no theft coverage and any damages on the bike will never be covered. not sure

I wonder what Insurance company
the Los Angeles area R1200R rider's are using ?

Thanks ShinySideUp !
That's THE LIST...
I have a month to find a better price.

Uninsured Medical coverage is a major cost + metro area, when comparing rates, these must be added to the comp/collision and liability numbers so we are comparing apples to apples.

For example, my Orange County Geico insurance (2010 R1200R 12 months) is as follows:

Bodily Injury Liability 100/300 - 155.00
Property Damage Liability 100 - 51.00
Uninsured & Underinsured Motorists 100/300 - 264.00
Comprehensive 500.00 Deductible - 117.00
Collision 500.00 Deductible - 563.00

Total is 1150.00
I am 46 years old, perfect driving record, been riding only 2 months
Progressive was over 2000.00 for the same coverage.

If a few of us could post their Los Angeles, Orange county or San Diego rates and coverages, we could make some interesting comparisons.

I had Formost in the past. They doubled my rates without warning, so I switched to McGraw. $600 total for both the R12 and the K75. The K is liability only. Roadside assistance is included on full coverage for $2 a year.

I have 3 bikes (08 R1200R, 95 R1100RS, 64 Norton 750 Atlas) insured with Geico and 1 rider under 25....the policy for all is 1019. I also checked with Markle Insurance....they are about $50 less for the same coverage 100/300/50 with 5k in accessory coverage. This is also upstate NY not LA. there are probably as many people on your block as in our whole county...even so that is quite a shocking increase.

I just recently switched to Geico with 100/300 and my annual premium is $540 and I'm still in the high risk category due to my age (24). No tickets or accidents and 6 more months until I magically gain the knowledge of how to ride/drive safely...

I called some friends living around Pasadena CA and they all pay around 400 or 600 according to parameters that are very similar to mine.

Geeeez don't want to sound to paranoid but it really feel like a guy in an office somewhere put his head in my files just to give me troubles.

Most of my house and stuff are insured with State Farm...I am going to tell them that I want to add my "new toy" and will see what the will answer.

Anyone use State Farm insurance ?

After reseaching different companies I went with Geico also. The R1200R was $359.00 and the F650GS was $151.00 full coverage and $250 deductable. Insuring a bike in Alaska wound naturally be cheaper than in California, but the point is that Geico offered the best coverage for less dollars than anyone else. I think Geico was $400 dollars cheaper than what is offered through BMWMOA.
Riding is therapeutic.

I've had Progressive for at least 10 years and they hit me with an 80% increase for no appearent reason that they could give me, so I switched the 3 bikes listed below to Dairyland, and upped my deductable to $ 500 on each bike. Total came to $ 444.00 for all three, which is almost exactly where I was with Progressive, but with a $ 250 deductable. Seems like longevity and a good record doesn't matter anymore.

I have SF on my house and cars. Quite happy. Not the cheapest, but good service.

They were rather expensive on the bikes, and the bikes it did not qualify for mulit-car discount.

Yep. We have all our cars, one motorcycle, and six scooters on State Farm. We've been quite happy, except that the local agent laughs whenever my wife calls with a new VIN number.

My Progressive went up too. But only from $439 to $592. A definite increase but not on the order of $1000 plus dollars. 100/300 comp collision etc. 500 ded. Geico quoted me $676 for similar coverage. I don't even get a good driver discount (yea a speeding ticket but not on the bike) but I do still get multi policy (2 others boat and RV).
I finally got got an RT!

Uff da. I suppose insured drivers are in the minority down there? #-o

I'm a 24 year old male with a clean record for the past few years (although, I've had a few tickets in the past.) Vehicles are a 2008 Honda Ruckus, 2003 Kymco Cobra, and 2004 R1150R Rockster. Here's my rates through Progressive:

(The insurance company decoded the Ruckus' VIN as a 2003 model year... hurrr)
