Is our battery covered under the 3 year warranty?

Post by LeonardoNYC »

Just took a morning ride to see a friend in Brooklyn. Rode the bike all week and seemed fine. After a half hour breakfast I get back on the bike and while the normal start up of the lights and Speedo/Tach did their normal thing and the lights worked --I pushed the start button and CLICK CLICK CLICK. ...Found a livery driver to give me a jump which worked and then got back to Manhattan and parked the bike. Once the bike was off I tried starting again and CLICK CLICK CLICk so I think the battery is a gone. I am close to BMW corporate and wondering if the battery is covered under warranty? Thanks in advance.

Fairly sure it's covered for two years.

my dealer has a big sign up at service saying that you have to only charge with the bmw charger and the battery must be taken care of in accordance to the manual, etc etc.

looks like they are trying to give themselves a way out of replacing batteries to me (although i have never had a battery problem on my r12r so i don't know).

i figure if you ride it a lot anf don't let it sit for over a few weeks your battery should last and be covered under warranty for at least 3 years. if you let it sit or plug it into a charger not compatible with gel batteries, it's likely that it's your fault and you should be responsible... doesn't mean you can't ask about replacement though. definitely ask about it first and tell them how you use the bike and see what they say.

The warranty on the battery is in your owners handbook.. 2 years from In-Service date (the date you drove it out of the dealers.)

thanks for the info..can't get to the bike for at least a few hours ..is removal of the battery fairly simple? take screws out of the terminals and lift? Or this being a BMW are three technicians from Bavaria needed?

I must have gotten one of those bad batteries from BMW like many others have gotten. Mine was dead after about three weeks of riding. Long story really; made me love to hate our one and only BMW service shop within 360miles.
