Re: quick release lids

Post by bimrluvr »

I just heard back from Karl Kugler and he will do a limited run if the numbers are right. Here are the preliminary details from Karl:

12 set minimum (a set does 4 lids and two case body)

$35 per set in plain aluminum finish.

$150 batch charge to be split by those who want anodized

$10 to ship all to one central place (me), $6.50 to mail individual places.

The shipping is what Kugler would charge, although it sounds low to me. If I take delivery for all, then I'll have to get covered for postage and envelopes.

Turnaround should be 2-3 weeks.

I was thinking about posting this widely here and on the IBMWR and RT Sport Touring website to ensure we get the minimum number of orders needed, but first I'll wait to see how the response from this board is...

BTW, the hinges I bought will not do the job without some tinkering and significant modifications, just in case anyone was wondering.

So far the list of 10 people who have expressed interest are:
Hottech
DMM
Zamp
sweatmark
R4R&R
obc
suzuki
duke
obc (1/2 set)
Me (1 or 1-1/2 set)

Just need two more. If you're on this list, please tell me if you have changed your mind. Please also tell me if you want anodized black.

I'm gonna post this on the BMWMOA site and maybe the BMWST or IBMWR sites, although I'd prefer to drive traffic this way.

I'm willing to be the money conduit if Karl doesn't want individual payments.

If it's ok, I could post on our local club to see if there's anymore interest from this area. Since they aren't made anymore, this may be a good last chance to get them!

Let me know and I'll cross post/reference the main link you have in buy/sell section.

We've got 12!

Post by bimrluvr »

I just got two more from one of the other sites so we're at 12. I'll post payment amounts and instructions as soon as Kugler emails me back whether he wants lotsa little payments or one big one (most probable).

R4R&R - I'm sure Karl would not mind getting more orders so go ahead and spread the word.

BTW, so far only one person is interested in anodized...anymore? Otherwise we're all getting the plain or brushed aluminum finish.

When do you need to place the order by? I'm in process of trying to purchase an R1150R (fingers crossed) and could use these if the deal goes through.

Hi Frank.
It'll kind of depend on how fast people send in their money once all the details are finalized. I can see trying to place the order by the end of next week if all goes well. But there's no drop-dead date that I know of. How long do you think you'll be before you pull the trigger?

Ready to start collecting money...so far it'll be plain aluminum only since we only have 1 or 2 interested ...let me know your preference anyway...

First, the pricing: The basic $35 cost plus Karl's postage and my postage and envelopes - I figure $40/set should cover it for most of you. Duke - I will ask for an extra $5 for the UK postage and let you know if it winds up being enough or what.
If you want extra screws or the tap, please just add that in and indicate what the extra money is for with your payment.
$5.00/set for extra sets of long screws (stainless button, optional for additional lid sets or spares)
$5.50/each for M5-0.8 tap required for installation (optional but offered as a convenience, must be specified at time of ordering)

I will collect the money by Paypal to m.chirnomas at gmail dot com

or for check or money order by mail, for those who don't use PayPal:

Morton Chirnomas
307 S. Elm Drive
Beverly Hills, CA 90212 (that's the slums of Beverly Hills)

My phone can be had by pm'ing me or emailing me direct at m.chirnomas at gmail dot com

I'd like to receive all orders, funds and place the order next Friday August 28th.

I should hopefully know by this weekend. My wife is still not convinced I need this bike - something about finishing my 911 restoration project first :).

I asked Karl what the tap is for and Karl replied:

The tap is used on one hole in each of the hinges on the stock bags.

That allows the bracket to be held in place on the inner half of the saddlebags for the brief period of time that the lids are being swapped.

The rest of the time the whole assembly is held together by the screw that goes from the inside of the saddlebag through to the bracket that is outside the stock hinge, sandwiching everything together.

To be honest, any decent local hardware store should have individual metric taps available for a buck or two less cost, but then you have to deal with getting there, fuel, etc. I just offer the taps as an option with the kits as a convenience after several of my early customers who live in metro areas and don’t have local hardware stores handy expressed interest in my supplying them.

He said he'll post the instructions and drawings on his website and when he does, I'll send a link around.

The trigger has been pulled :). I'm placing my order today. Standard aluminum finish is fine - I may end up having them powder coated before installation as I have to send a batch of car parts off to be done anyway, and PC should be more durable than Anodizing.

thanks,
Frank

I'm going to wait until Friday to place the order to give any stragglers a chance to get in on this.

Thanks everyone!
