Fuel pump doesn't cycle
I'm helping a neighbour chick fix up a 98 R11R with 17k. It runs pretty good but after it sits a few days the fuel pump and computer doesn't cycle and no start but everything else works. 1st time a trickle charge after a few hrs fixed it I think. Its now on its second charge, if this makes it start in the morning I guess the battery is not holding a charge, if this is not the fix is there a common fix? relay or some other loose wire? save me some shoe leather please. I did a search and couldn't come up with any thing similar.

probably the battery has exceeded its lifespan and does not keep its charge. Try re-charging using a charger. If the problem persists go get a new one. Another issue could be the generator which does not charge the battery any more (or not enough). But if you charge the battery with a charger and let is sit for a few days and then try to start the bike and you have the same problem it is definitely the battery which has gone to the happy hunting ground ...

Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
The battery is not the problem, I can move the side stand back and forth and hear it click so I,m assuming it is not the problem. I don't have an owners manual so I can determine which relay/fuse will affect the fuel pump. Maybe a wire poped of the fuel pump? fuel pump nfg?
Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
What happens if you turn the key? Do the lights go on? Does the engine crank when you push the starter (this should happen even if the fuel pump does not run)? Have you tried a crossover cable from your car battery?
If all works except the fuel pump then it maybe time to remove the tank and inspect the pump (the plug for the pump sits on the right side near the scrw which holds the tank). Another option in this case maybe the fuel filter is clogged ...

Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
Yes, everything works and engine turns over. That is what I was thinking about the fuel pump, do you have to remove the tank to check the conections or just lift it up some? Will a clogged filter cuase the pump to not whine and cycle?
Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
You can see the plug which connects the pump when you lift the tank near the screw which holds the tank. However in order to inspect the wiring and/or the pump itself requires removal the tank. Suggest you get yourself the manual of your oilhead (http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp) where you find a chapter dealing with the fuel tank/pump and alike. A clogged fuel filter may cause the pump go to the happy hunting ground ...

Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
Thanks for that manual website, I booked marked it for future referance.
another note is that the tach does not sweep, could the motronic be a problem here? When the bike ran it ran great and this no cycle thing happen once before, just sould like a loose wire or plug or sender/relay??

Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
What do you mean by "tach"? Do you mean the speedometer? If yes please note the speedometer of the R1100R is driven by a flexion wave going down to the weel where you can find the drive. If the speedometer doesn't work probably the flexion wave needs to be replaced. Just screw it off at the drive and at the speedometer and see if it works ...

Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
I was talking about the tachometer, Most fuel injected bikes the tach needle does a sweep as the key is turned on. I can't remember if beemers do this.
I have the pump unit out, the filter seems not to be cloged but when I put 12V to the pump I hear nothing, I guess it should whine spit fart or make some kind of noise?

Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
As I said, the R1100R does not have an electronic tachometer but a manual one driven by a flexion wave. Hence check that if your tachometer shows no speed ... And with regards to the pump, yes it should make some noise when you apply power. If it doesn't it has certainly gone south and needs to be replaced. Check out item number 360167380950 on a famous auction site and you'll find one ...

Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
Thanks for confirming, I found a pump replacement kit with hoses, clamps and strainer for $145. I'll check that auction. Also, there is a huge m/c boneyard here in Phoenix.
Re: Fuel pump doesn't cycle
I think Oliver pretty much answered your question already, but I know what you're talking about and there is no needle sweep. Not on my '97 anyway. You should hear the fuel pump should cycle when the key is turned, though.soggybottom wrote:I was talking about the tachometer, Most fuel injected bikes the tach needle does a sweep as the key is turned on.
