coupler replacement

Post by L Boogie »

Argh, I dropped my bike in a parking lot at low speeds today, and one of the fuel line quick disconnects broke. I'm going to order a new pair of these nickel plated ones from A&S http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=47556
Anyone have experience with these? Also, how do I take off the old ones? There's an odd looking metal clamp on the hose. It's not the generic kind of hose clamp I'm used to, am I supposed to squeeze the square on it or something? I can't figure it out.
Thanks in advance.

I switched mine out with no problem at all. I used a dremel to cut the hose clamps and you will need to pinch the fuel line with either a clamp or a pair of vise grips. I also marked each line with some white out or just make it obvious with some type of marking which hose is intake and which is out flow. Do one at a time not to mix them up and take your time. It is no big deal.

After doing 3 of these change-overs, one near darkness at the Ozark Bash in the parking lot, I have good advice. Trying to reuse the existing rubber fuel lines will waste a lot of your time and if you're not real careful, possibly gouge up the hose internals where the plastic line barbs of the QD's were removed. If you cut the lines right at the end of those barbs, the lines may be too short. I recommend you go with new EFI fuel lines and 8 new screw-n-nut EFI clamps. Especially if your bike is 5 years or more older like mine was.
The chrome plated brass QD's are just all around wonderful and should have been on the bike from the factory.

Thanks for the advice, I just ordered new braided hoses and screw clamps. The stock clamps don't look like screw clamps, but I couldn't figure out which clamps they are on the parts fiche. And I figure the braided hoses can't hurt, and don't cost that much more.

Here's what you need:

3 - feet of Fuel Injection hose 5/16"...Napa, Autozone...etc..Napa carries the gates brand..the best IMHO
1 - set of QD fuel line connectors from Beemer Bone Yard http://beemerboneyard.com/cpcqkdiscon.html
1 - BMW fuel Filter (if you plan on changing that too)
12 - #13 BMW Stainless Steel FI hose clamps (you need 12 if you do the fuel filter) 8 if you dont.

Take your time and go slow. What ever you do, don't buy that zinc plated QD junk from A&S. BIG MISTAKE

BMW stainless steel FI hose clamp (part number: 13311460928), you can get similar one from most auto parts store without the BMW stamp for less money.

also, don't waste your time, money and energy on the beemerboneyard's clamp. Junk them even you can get it for free 8)

Phang is SOOOO CORRECT!!!

The clamps that come with Beemer Bonyard's parts are JUNK!!! The QD's are great though. Just throw those clamps away, go to the auto parts store, and buy some better clamps when you buy the hose.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

I went with the omega engineering disconnects. Great quality. You need 2 ft-lcd170-05 and 2 ft-lcd220-05 and the ssfi clamps althouth i used the idecker clamps {OEM} since i have the tool . The clamps were used for polyethlene hydronics plumping and really arent suited for fuel line.I second changing the fuel line if 5yrs old
